I was on liquids 10 days before surgery (liquids included: broth, carnation instant breakfast, skim milk, pudding, jello, popcicles, water, 100% fruit juices and protien drinks)  then the 24 hours before surgery it was just clear liquids (water, 100% fruit juices diluted 1/2 and 1/2 with water, broth and jello). I lost 11 pounds on that diet.

  • My pre-op diet was only one week long and the liquid part of it was only 24 hours...I guess I was kind of lucky in that regard. I definetely followed the rules to a tee because I did not want to wake up and find out that I had to have an open surgery versus laprocopic because I hadn't shrank my liver enough. In all I lost 11 lbs. that week. Below, I have copied and pasted the pre-op diet instructions from the patient manual where I had my surgery at Duke University. Their website is at http://www.dukewls.org

    1. Beginning one week before surgery, change your diet to the one below. This diet will help shrink your liver and make surgery safer. It will also introduce you to what the typical postoperative diet is like:
    2. Eat more high protein, low fat foods: Lean meats, poultry, fish, seafood, eggs, low fat cheese, light yogurt, skim milk, cottage cheese, tofu, beans/lentils.
    • Eat less than 4 servings per day of these high carbohydrate foods: (1 serving = ½ cup or 1 piece of fresh fruit or bread). Fruit/fruit juice, breads, pasta, crackers, cereal, rice, potatoes.
    • Avoid: sugary foods and beverages, desserts and candy.
    • Limit these high fat foods and condiments: Butter/margarine, oils, salad dressing, sour cream, mayonnaise, cream, gravy, cream cheese, chips, high fat meats, bacon, sausage, fried foods, desserts.
    1. On the morning of the day before surgery, begin a clear liquid diet. Also drink one bottle of Magnesium Citrate (Citrate of Magnesia). This is a fairly strong laxative and will work within 4 to 8 hours

So far I have lost 23 pounds pre-op, and the Dr. was very happy to see my loss since oreintation.  She said that I only have four more pounds if we want to be exact, but I was ok'd to get the surgery without a follow up.  I have not been on liquid, just following the gastrict meal plan set out by the nut.
