Howdy 20-somethings!
This is a tradition from the Main Board that I thought would be fun to try here. Every evening Charlie (an awesome RNY post-op who is just about the friendliest lady you could ever hope to meet) posts a thread called "Eatin' Good in the Neighborhood" and it gives folks the opportunity to share what they've eaten that day. I like this for a few reasons - first it gives me ideas of stuff to try (I don't know about you but once I find something that works I tend to make it over and over until I am burnt out on it), second it gives the newbies an idea of what a post-op diet REALLY looks like (you know so they don't just believe all the junk they say on Oprah and other talk shows about how we can only eat 2 grapes for the rest of our lives) and finally it offers some accountability (and everyone could use a little accountability sometimes). So I'm going to try it and if you hate it tell me so, if you like it tell me that too (and chime in!). I also want your opinion on something else - I could offer some suggestions and feedback to those *****spond if I see something I could help with. The only reason I would say anything is because I want to help. I am past the point of judging people based on what they eat because I have my share of days where I blow it too (and if this becomes a tradition around here you'll see that). I also have almost 2 years experience preparing meals as a post-op, shopping and listening to how other post-ops eat and I would be more than happy to share that with anyone. So for now let's try it this way - if you want feedback on your menu for the day say something like "feedback welcome" at the bottom. If you don't want feedback just don't say anything and not to worry I won't say anything. And remember - be honest because no one is judging you (and if they are I'll kick 'em around okay?) and being untruthful doesn't help anyone.
So here goes.
I am still recovering from my exploratory surgery that I had on Friday, so my pouch is swollen and I am a bit disinterested in food. I shoot for 1400-1600 calories a day to be made up of 65-70 grams of protien, less than 120 grams of carbs and I don't pay attention to fat because if the other two things are in line the fat should be too and as everyone should be I try to get at least 64 oz of water (these are the rules set in place by my nutritionist based on how far out I am, my activity level, my weight and height - so make sure to talk to your nutritionist about specific goals you should be meeting daily because they are going to be a lot different than mine). I am also hypoglycemic (I have sporadic blood sugar that gets low easily) so I have a "feeding" every 3 hours (it is a "feeding" and not a "meal" because meal as a term is misleading - you think bigger and more portions, whereas a "feeding" is just enough to sustain you based on what you need).
8:30 - 12 oz hazelnut coffee w/ 8 oz steamed skim milk stirred in
12 oz water and pain meds
12:30 - 2 chicken quesadilla triangles w/sour cream and salsa (12 inch zesty herb tortilla folded in half over grilled chicken breast cubes, colby jack cheese, fresh diced tomatoes, diced onions and diced peppers - cut into 6 triangles - so I ate about 1/3 of it)
12 oz water more pain meds
4:00 - 3 oz natural yogurt w/ 2 sliced strawberries stirred in
12 oz water more pain meds
7:00 - 2 more quesadilla triangles
Working on a 24 oz water bottle
I probably will have the rest of my quesadilla before I go to bed since it sat pretty well. I am shamingly low on calories today - fitday.com says I'm at about 603 with the rest of my quesadilla. For carbs I'm at 42 grams and protien 49 grams. So I'll probably have a glass of skim milk before bed to beef up. Normally I am better than this but I'm not feeling so hot. This is not a usual day for me, normally I at least get 1000 cals and much more protien.
Let me know what you think about this idea and chime in with your menu. if you like the idea but can't remember what you ate start a food journal tomorrow. Write down what you eat (every bite!) and when and then share it with us when you get a chance. This will help you keep track of where you're doing well and where you could use some work. My food journal is one of my strategies for long term success and there are lots of post-ops further out than me who feel the same way. Hope your food days are good and hope you're eating better than me today!
