Has anyone else had more depression after surgery? i mean the weight loss is a god-send, and i have no reason to be depressed, but i was just wondering if anyone has had the same issue. thanks.

I'm pre-op, but I've read soooo many posts that talk about this.  Food has been a comfort to us for a long time and part of you probably misses that friend.  Just know that you're among friends here.  :-)

I have been coping with depression and anxiety for a long time and have taken prozac before. At my pre-op evaluation the psychiatrist at our WLS center recommended I go on paxil instead to help with the anxiety better. I have also heard that the loss of the eating to cope mechanism can lead to increases in depression for post-ops.  While I think that is probably the biggest factor, I think there is more to it than just that. We have a lot of issues with all of the changes going on in our lives. Different people react to changes in different ways. For some of us all of the changes (eating, exercise, appearances, perceptions, etc..) just add up to more stress or anxiety. Our program psychiatrist called me for a routine one month follow up call this week and we touched on this a little bit, she recommended that I talk to my primary care physician about increasing my dosage of paxil to help deal with the increase of factors adding to my anxiety.

OMG YES!!

i have been teated for depression for the last 10 years.  I had a horrible time dealing with my food addiction.  I seriously felt like a crack addict.  there was crying, screaming, fits, everything.

I'm down 75lbs which is great, but i have been in this funk for a month.  then last week i was in a car accident, broke my rt arm, had to have surgery on it and am having a hard time finding a healthy coping mechanism.  its very difficult, because the wls fixes you physically not mentally and for alot of us its the mental that got us here.  therapy and exercise seem to be the best helps.  yay endorphins!
