RNY vs LapBand

I'm new to this and am considering WLS. I've noticed that most of you have had RNY. I was wondering what made you choose this over LapBand? I know that there are tons of people on the LapBand forum,  but most of them are older.  Is there any reason why the younger group has chosen RNY? I'm 28 w/ a BMI of 41.

I originally went in thinking that I wanted lap band, however, after a discussion with my doctor I went with RNY.  I think it is an individual choice.  Both seem to have about equal long term results, but the weight tends to come off more quickly with the RNY.   On the down side the RNY takes longer for you to eat regular foods again.  The lap band also means having a foreign band in your stomach which has a small chance of erosion or slipage.   What sealed the deal for me and the RNY was that the Lap requires more doctors apts and maintence because you have to have it adjusted with fluid.  I think both are good great WLS option, you just need to think about what will work best for you personally :) If you have any more questions feel free to ask!

I haven't had the surgery yet.  I just got approved for the LapBand.  I am 29 by the way.  I am choosing to go the LapBand route because I am anemic and I don't want to add to my condition.  I talked with my surgeon and we decided that this would be a better choice for me.  Plus I did admit to him that I am very poor at taking vitamens and I know if I had RNY that is a must and I don't think I could keep it up and I believe I would be harming myself more so than if I just stay the weight I am.  The idea of having to do more visits doesn't bother me so much and having to go in to get adjusted.  I like that knowledge to know that even after I get to goal that if I ever need that extra help with my restriction that I can always go back and get a fill.  Having WLS is very personal and you really need to think about what you really want.  There are all types of surgery out there and not just the two.  So really look around and jump for board to board and get to know the other surgeries too.  I know there seems to be a lot of older people on the Lapband board but not really.  There are quit a few young ones too.

"Because we do not know when we will die we get to think of life as an inexhaustible well and yet everything happens only a certain number of times and a very small number really. How many more times will you remember a certain afternoon of your childhood, an afternoon that is so deeply a part of your life that you can't even conceive of your life without it. Perhaps four or five times more? Perhaps not even that. How many times will you watch the full moon rise, perhaps twenty, and yet it all seems so limitless."

I personally chose the lapband because it is minimally invasive, and safer, I know that you lose faster with RNY, but the long term results are pretty close. I also like that it is adjustable, so if you hit a plateau or start gaining you can just go in and have the band tightened. Whatever you chose, I wish you luck!! -Jenelle

I ultimately chose RNY because I need that extra something to deter me from eating the carbs and sugar. I HOPE that once I have surgery (23 more days!)...that my body will not allow me to eat sugar again. It will be the death of me--lol! With the lap-band you have to be a little more accountable for your food choices from day one..................you don't have that period where your body just won't let you eat the bad stuff like you do with the RNY. I need this time for me to develop good eating habits. That's basically it........otherwise I probably would've chosen the band. Good luck with whatever decision you make!!  =)
