Pregnancy after WLS?
Hello everyone, I'm brand new to the board and just getting started on my journey. I meet with my primary doctor next week and then I'll begin a 6-month period of working with a nutritionist before I can be approved for surgery by insurance. As long as my BMI is still over 40 in 6 months, I should be approved without a problem.
However, I'm 25 and I've been married to my fabulous (and hott!) husband for 3 years. We'd love to have children within a couple of years after my surgery. Have any of you experienced problems or issues getting pregnant after WLS? How about getting enough nutrition for the growing baby?
I know it's early to worry about this... shoot, I'm not even approved for surgery yet! But I'm a planner and I'll feel better if I know the complications I may face.
Thanks!
Most people find it much much easier to get preggers after WLS because of the increased fertility due to loss of excess body weight. I have no heard of people not getting enough nutrition but I am sure there are people out there... it is very important to wait the time your surgeon says to get preggers post-op - I believe its 18months - 2 years after surgery... you want to be out of the losing phase.
First visit to surgeon - 288 ~ bmi 45.1
2 week pre-op 252 ~ bmi 39.5
Total lost - 153 Since surgery - 117!
Goal weight - 155 (mine) 180 (surgeons)
Current weight - 135 (2020 I lost 10lbs due to dedicating myself to working out more and being in better shape)
1/14/2025 still maintaining 135 :-)
Extended TT, lipo, fat injections - 11/2011
BA/BL/Arm Lift - 7/2014
Scar revision on arms - 3/2015
HALO laser on arms/neck 9/2016
Thigh Lift 10/2020
Thigh Lift revision 10/2021
I'm in the same boat. My hubby wants kids right now, but there's no way I could be healthy and carry a baby at my weight much less get pregnant.
I have stressed this to my surgeon and he said no preggers while losing. You want to lose all the weight you're going to lose before getting pregnant. He sisn't say much about the nutrition of a baby, but more so that you have to lose the weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle before even thinking about baby. I asked a time line, and he said 18 mo to 2 yr, but if it's sooner than great. He said that if it's unter 18 months, I'd have to visit him every 3 months while pregnant and also with nutritionist.
This is one of my main reasons for WLS. We want kids, and just turning 29 in March, I'm looking at the clock tick away. I didn't get married until I was 27, but still, I always imagined I'd have a few kids running around by now.
Best wished in your journney! Jessica
Well the getting pregnant part is not an issue, I got pregnant 2 weeks after my surgery, I wound up having a miscarriage 2 months later, and it was for the best. In the begining of your weight loss, you really cant eat enough to FULLY support a baby, and I believe that was the reason for my miscarriage, I was 2 months pregnant and during that time lost 50 lbs, thats just not good for a baby.
I talked to my ob gyn about future pregnancys and he said it wouldnt be a problem at all and that i would actually have a much healthier pregnancy with my next baby, I have a 2yr old that I had a really tough pregnancy with due to my weight at the time.
after time, you can eat more and your body adjusts to the changes in your body, and you should be fine
GOOD LUCK

Wow.. the similarities. I am 25 also, my insurance company requires a 6 months monitored dietary program with my PCP. I go in this Fri 05/04 for round 1. I found this site to be AWESOME! I don't have a significant other right now but I desire to have kids someday as well. I have done some research and they say that the WLS makes you a fertile myrtle
however there are strong suggestiions not to get preganat within the first 18-24 months because your body is still adjusting to thi change and they don't want the baby to be malnourished or for you to become that way as well.
