I am about 11 weeks out and at around 15 weeks out is my sisters birthday. I really want to tey a little bit of a drink then but im a little scared. Could alcohol put a hole in the pouch or cause a leak? What is the best alcohol to drink post -op. I was thinking vodka with water and mixing in a crystal light. Thanks for the input!

I was wondering the same thing. My 25th b-day party is 6 weeks and 5 days from my RNY and I would like to at least take a toast. I think you are right about the vodka and water w/crystal light its my plan. I have herd people drinking as early as 4 weeks and other not till a year I am going to ask my surgeon I trust his advice.

NOTHING tasts as good as thin FEELS!    Tamara;)

No it cannot put a hole or cause a leak. You will find that drinking post-op is much different than pre-op. It will hit you a lot quicker and you will be more dehydrated from it. If you chose to drink make sure you drink water inbetween drinks if you have more than one. Alcohol is high in sugar/carbs so be aware of that as well... I dont think there is one thats better than another to drink its just all personal preference. My surgeon reccomended to stay away from alcohol forever but when I questioned said to at least wait 6 months. Because of the bypass its a lot harder on your liver. Also it can cause you to lower inhibitions and eat badly :)

Yeah I would talk to your surgeon. I know My surgeon gave me the go ahead at 6wks post-op. He said it was ok to drink but in moderation. My choice of drink now a days is Vodka and cranberry. I've also tried vodka and crystal light. it wasn't too bad. I try to stay away from those sweet mixed drinks as much as I can.  Be smart and don't forget to have fun!

I would agree, talk to your surgeon. I was just in a nutrition class the other day for WLS and they said that alcohol has a negative reaction with the ketones you produce from losing weight and that it can be very dangerous. Maybe that's just something my weight loss program tells people though since many of you have said you got the go ahead at 6 weeks and my program wants you to wait till you stop losing weight.

Also, I dont think anyone has mentioned the effect of alcohol on your Blood alcohol level.

The alcohol is going to be absorbed into your system completely Undiluted, whereas before it was diluted by the stomach acid in your stomach. As a result, 1 drink can be like 3. Also, it takes twice as long for your liver to process the alcohol because of this.  In someone who hasn't had the by pass, it takes 1 hour for your liver to process 1 oz of alcohol.  With the by pass, because the alcohol is undiluted, it takes 2 hours for 1 oz.

Keep in mind that you are going to get Drunker WAY faster.  At least you'll be a cheap date right? :D
