Has anyone gone through the process and half way to getting a surgery date, gotten a new job? I start a new job and I am right in the middle of the nutritional classes that are required for the surgery. Just wondering how other employers reacted to time off right after being hired. Thanks, Kristina

Hey Kristina, I went to a seminar for WLS one week and was hired at a new job the next week. Of course by the time I actually had my surgery I was at my job for three months. I had health insurance but not enough paid time off. My employer wasn't happy about it but since it was for surgery and not some kind of vacation or something they let me take the time off unpaid, I only took three weeks off. Again, they were not happy but not really mean about it either. (I was having problems a few months later and it was brought up that they did give me the time off but didn't have to since I was so new) I also didn't tell them exactly what I was having done. I just told them I needed abdominal surgery, and my surgeon's note was very vauge as well. I also tried to give them as much notice as I could, turned out to be about two weeks. They weren't very nice about anything though.....I hope your employer is nicer! Good luck!

I will know tomorrow. I am doing orientation type activities and they will have had time to think about it. I don't want to tell them what kind of surgery it is, but they will eventually know, with the weight loss. I told them the say the hired me as I did not want to mention it in the interview. I am hoping they will say it is not a problem.

I started my job in May 06. I haven't been here very long but my employer was quite nice. I am only taking off Wednesday to Wednesday and I told them I would work for home for half a day if I was up to it. I also did not say what I was having just that I was having surgery. As long as your new job has insurance that covers the surgery you should be fine. Some places are really nasty, but, they can't fire you because you had to have surgery. good luck meegan

I have been at my job for under 2 weeks and will be having surgery in November. I have insurance through my husband's work, so that was not an issue. I am approved and have a date to meet with the surgeon. They are doing the training of myself and another person so that she can cover for me while I am gone.

Nevermind about the new job. I was let go today because they decided I wasn't the right person for the job. I am out of work now, except for substitute teaching.
