So tomorrow night I am going out for a bachlorette party. The girl getting married is a good friend from college and also the one who's wedding I am in next weekend. Get the dress tomorrow so we'll see how much altering I need done! But I digress... We are getting a hotel, going to Cheeseburger in Paradise, going to Jillians, and then out to bars. Originally my plan was Cheeseburger, Jillians, and home. However the more I think about it, the more I really want to go out. I never get to go to bars and very rarely go out with girlfriends etc. Soooooo I know alcohol isn't recommended. I also know it will hit me a lot faster/harder than it did before. However I really would like to have just one drink. One drink I can work on all night. I'll be 8 weeks out on Tuesday. I was thinking about just a vodka and cranberry with lots of ice to water it down. I guess I am just trying to convince myself it would be OK....Man I sat this week with a plate full of chocolate chip cookies in front of me and didn't have the urge to eat one. In fact I felt nauseaus. However I really really want a drink...I feel so weak/losing will power.... Sam

Every person has their own ultimate NO NO's, but God knows none of them are universal. I have talked to my nut about this subject a lot, heck I'm 21. She said to go out and have 1 drink every so ofton is not a sin. But avoid juices something that was recommended to me was order a glass of iced water and a shot and bring crystal light this way you can make your own little mix. we are all in our 20's, for me to say i wont ever have a drink again would be crap, but i can say i wont ever have a double cheeseburger which would be a sin for me. We all have our own convictions.. Just do in moderation and keep hydrated. P.S - a lot of alcohol doesnt have calories, its what you mix it with that does.

I'm just over three months out and haven't felt the urge to have any alcohol since I so rarely drank even before the surgery. But I was at a club right near the two month mark with friends and had cranberry juice by itself. The juice they serve at bars is the really sugary kind and while it helped with my hypoglycemia for awhile, it actually made me feel sicker in the long run. So I would avoid that like the plague. I was at a bar the other night too and just drank water. If you feel the need to keep up appearances, just tell everyone it's vodka and act drunk.

Its fine to have a drink... my surgeon said to avoid alcohol but its not a huge "no-no". I am almost 3 months out and have a drink or two now and then. What I found is it doe**** me quicker than it did before.... the biggest difference is how dehydrated I am from just drinking that little bit. Cranberry juice is loaded with sugar so you may want to consider drinking something else... wine is good to start off with. Just make sure to drink water before the drink and keep drinking water after. I found I will feel crappy the next morning even if I only had 1 small drink.... liquor seems to dehydrate me more than wine does.

Thanks! I ended up drinking water most the evening and then when we decided we weren't going to anymore bars, I had a Bud Light. Didn't feel it or anything. So I survived. The other girls were drinking liquor and they said the drinks were real strong so I'm glad I didn't go that route. Liquor and I didn't get a long before surgery anyway. It was fun for a one time thing but don't think I'll be drinking again anytime soon....oh wait, next weekend is the wedding! Haha! Sam

Sam, Go for it if you want to. I had my surgery on May 3, 2004 and by July 4 I was helping drink a gallon of SOJU straight. (korean whisky) For me, when i get drunk, instead of falling asleep sooner, i am so hyper that i don't sleep. Just make sure you have a ride home though, please. Take care and have fun! Marti

Alright...straight up...they say it isn't good for us, however, lots of things aren't good for people. I have drank a few times since my surgery 4 months ago beginning at 3 months post-op. When I drink I get Light Cranberry ****tail (from Ocean Spray...only 40 cals for 8oz and like 6-8 grams of sugar) and I mix it with vodka. it is a low cal, low sugar drink that doesn't make me feel guilty. The first time I drank, it hit me really hard, really fast. Since then, I take it slower and I make sure that I put lots of ice and more juice than vodka....which is much different than pre-op. Just be careful. The suggestion to bring your own crystal light and just get a vodka water is a good one, if the bar will let you do that. I highly discourage any tonic or other carbonated beverages (ie beer, mojito, ect). My surgeon says that the carbonation can make your pouch stretch faster and wider.Good luck and have fun.

Ok, I know this is old now, but i still had to chime in. I'm a year and a month post-op. I started to have a drink every now and then about 5 months post-op. I was fine at first. I would drink rum and diet cokes. About 4 months ago, I started to drink a lot...I mean a lot! I still do. I mean I will go out and have about 5-7 beers and about 4 shots (usually jager bombs or tequila) I know it's all a no-no, but for some reason, I just started to really party. I think I've actually become an alcoholic, which I heard can be common for post-ops. I guess we swap addictions going from food to drinking or to sex or to shopping...whatever. I haven't been to any meetings or seen a shrink b/c I am stubborn and have too much pride, but i'm trying to really cut back now. I mean I was drinking about 5 times a week like that....not good. So just be careful. This kinda came from nowhere. I don't even know how I let my drinking get so out of control. I've also had a lot of bad stuff happen to me when I was drunk like many blackouts, a concussion from falling down after passing out, not to mention giving my number out to ugly men at bars (haha, had to throw that out there). So just be carful is all I'm saying.

I honestly had my first alcoholic drink at about 2 months post-op. I had just one... no biggie. I am just about 1-1/2 yrs out and I drink about once a month. I can handle about 5 drinks before I get to wasted. My drink of choice: Captain and Diet or Bacardi and Diet.
