Lap Band on 11/20/06 with
Hi Everyone, I know many people have probably posted about deciding whether to get a lap-band or RNY but here goes. At first, I was really all for having an RNY done, but now I'm not so sure. I'm really struggling with the pros and cons for each one. I'm not totally comfortable having my digestive system rerouted, but I also lack self control when it comes to eating the proper diet so the "dumping" would help me a lot. I know there are some lap-banders on the 20's message board. How has your weight loss been so far? Wendy

RNY on 11/28/05 with
Hi Wendy, Lap band or RNY..... there is a total life style change with both. One thing you do need to realize is that you have to do all your research and do what is best for you. Taking opinions on both is good... but you need to make sure you understand all the medial and psych. facts. Not all RNY people dump. I don't. With both you still have to work on self control as you can out eat either of the surgeries if you try hard enough, or don't try hard enough I should say. What ever you choose you have to be ready to change your habits so you can use your new tool to the best of it's ability. You can do it... that isn't a problem. Just put your mind to it and you will be golden! Lots of luck to you on your journey! Chrissy

My only caution with Lap-band is find out how many fills you get for how long before you have to start paying for them and how much you'll have to pay.

Well I'm biased towards the RNY, since that's what I had of course! But here's what I liked about it versus the Lap-band: 1. Decreased (or non-existent, depends on person) hunger hormone with the RNY for the first year or so. 2. No cheating allowed, you can't have it "loosened". My surgeon and the others in his group have done a lot of conversions from lap to RNY because people with the lap lost the weight, went in to have it loosened and gained it all back. 3. Dumping is a possibility, sadly I'm not someone who does it (at least not yet), but it's there as a possible restraining device for many. 4. I don't know how much stretch/give there is with the lap band, but I know with the RNY it's pretty limited. If you try to overeat you'll just throw it right back up. So you're physically forced to eat a moderate amount and no cheating is possible. 5. In order for the lap-band to be successful permanently you have to use it permanently. So if you're going for permanent anyway, why not just go all the way? I'm sure someone with the lap can post some counter-arguments.
