Big Decision...
Krista,
I had the RNY I love it! I will admit I have and will always be working hard. I excersise at least 5 days a week. I watch everything I put in my mouth. I have committed to a healthy lifestyle.
I don't know much about the switch. I think you need to look into your habits and see your true self, sounds corny but any WLS only fixes the stomach not the head. It can be a struggle at times to not eat unhealthy things.
I wish you the best of luck!

I decided on the RNY because if I'm going to jump into the water, I'm going to JUMP into the water. So far I haven't had any issues with it. I'm doing really well, feeling good, losing faster than I thought I would. It's just great all around.
I really had to think hard to decide between RNY and the Lap Band. But I'm young, and I didn't want to have to replace the band in 30 or 40 years, if it would wear out. That was just my experience.

I would ask your doctor about it. Its a very personal choice. I went with RNY becuase it has been done more often. I started out at 350 and I'm now right around 200 lbs. I researched both surgeries and this was just the better one for me. I plan on having kids and I really wanted to not have to worry about vitamin levels so much later on down the road.

Yeah, I will be honest too, I don't know anything about the switch, I guess your doctor should tell you the differences and help you make an educated decision. My decision was between the band and RNY and I chose RNY. Because again, if I was going to do it, I was going to DO IT. I started out at 285 in Feb 06 and I am now 210. I am happy with it.
I guess talk to your doctor more about it.

I also went into this not sure of which surgery was best for me. I did a lot of research and attended wls support groups before I made an appointment with a surgeon. The research shows that the RNY is the most common, having been a routine type of surgery for over 15 years now. The best types of surgeries are the ones that are neither fully malabsorbative or restrictive. A combination will help you maintain the vitamin and nutritional requirements your body needs to survive. Also, if you walk into surgery thinkin, " hey, this is reversible if i dont like it," than you should not be consideing this at all. any of the wls are permanent, and because we are so young, we need to think about things like, repllaccemant laps and things like that. I say meet with a surgeon that does both the switch and the RNY, and meet with your PCP, and see what they think. also, put your personal health into it. i chose RNY because of comorbidities like current vitamin defieciencies and thyroid disease. Good luck to you!!!
