I had both of my knees replaced 6 years ago, and it was THE best thing I've ever done.  Even better than my WLS, because it allowed me to function as a fairly normal person.  Now that I have lost the weight, I am even happier that I had them done, because now my hubs and I are walking and hiking almost everyday, and my life is just getting better and better!

5' 5" tall. VSG on August 4, 2015/ Starting weight 239.9/ Surgery weight 210.9/ Current weight 137.4/ Goal weight 140/ No longer overweight, now a NORMAL weight. Now that I'm at goal, it's time to move on to maintenance!!!!!!!!

I am 4.5 years out and 64 almost 65. I find the best exercise swimming. There is no stress on the joints and the muscles I have gained have helped my back a lot. It is non weight baring so will not effect your knee

Exercise does not make me lose the weight I recently put on but it makes me feel better so I am more careful about what I eat.

I have a bad knee but also bike. If I make sure the seat is high enough it does not stress my knee. You may need to wait until you are cleared for that.

Yes. I think you need to find a weight loss surgeon to see about this ASAP. If you cannot get an appointment soon, I would see your PCP or a gastroenterologist. I hope you find relief, soon.

I'm looking for btdt, or advice on a situation. In the past two-three weeks I cannot keep ANYTHING solid down. I kept trying, and no matter what it was, it immediately hurt and came back up, even just 4 or 5 bites of beef barley soup.

Last week, thoroughly fed up with spending half an hour every time I tried to eat in bathroom, I went on a few days of chicken broth, popsicles, and SF koolaid (can't drink water, never have been able to since the surgery). A few days ago I attempted adding in a single mashed potato with cheese - I was able to eat about 1/4 of it. I also tried "fluff stuff" (eggface's recipe) which is basically jello and greek yogurt beaten up until it's fluffy-ish. Again, I managed just a few bites before getting nauseous. I was able to keep both down though.

It took me 4 days to finish the jello stuff - which was 3.5 oz of yogurt, and 1 cup of dissolved jello. I was doing okay on the potato, I ate 1/4 the first night, about half of what was left yesterday, and then finished it tonight, but it came right back up.

I'm always either hungry or naseated. Has anyone had experience with this? Do I just need to go back to clear liquids for a month? Would that have serious impact on my health (other than extreme annoyance and boredom.) BTW, I'm almost 8.5 years out from my surgery.

I have a few other physical issues that aren't surgery related - I have disc degeneration in my back, they're talking about a fusion, and I've had a headache for a year (literally - not a headache one a day for a year, but a headache that never goes away for over a year) so I'm also on meds that are known to cause nausea. Not taking them is not an option - It would lead very quickly to very bad things. I don't currently have a WLS doctor - is this something I should be trying to find and get an appointment with?

Does anyone have any suggestions of other things I can eat?  Living on chicken bouillion and fluff is making me want to just stop eating all together.

I'm sick of this. I am sick of living in this disaster of a body. It just keeps getting more and more screwed up. I'm REALLY hoping someone has some easy advice, but who am I kidding? Nothing about my health is easy.

You go girl!  I tell people my only regret is not doing the surgery 10 years earlier!  I hope I am doing as well as you are when I am 16 years out.

Thanks so much to all of you for replying!  It is always great to find support from people who have similar experiences!  I have faithfully been doing my physical therapy exercises and last week went to the chiropractor - boy did that help!  I am making slow but steady progress but I don't have clearance to do any aerobic exercise until I get my range of motion back in my knee.  I have an appointment with my surgeon next week but I don't think he is going to clear me to go back to work for a couple of weeks.

OH well - I keep reminding myself the knee will improve and in the long term this will be a wonderful thing.

For those of you looking at diet - a friend with Crohns disease and other auto-immune problems was advised by her Dr to try a diet by a Dr. Hyman (Eat Fat Get Thin) that is a high protein low carb with whole foods (no factory foods).  I agreed to go on the diet with her and with only slight modifications I have done well and lost a few pounds.

Hello everyone,

I am 51 and was sleeved in 5/2008. Since menopause I've gained weight, and find it difficult to lose. I was jogging 4 miles and working out 3-5 days a week. I haven't been very active in the last 7 months since I have a stress fracture. I weighed a whopping 243 at my doctors appointment in Jan, with hypertension BP reading. I started low carbing with that wake up call. So far since March I'm down 28lbs, and 31 to go reach my goal. I've yet to start back working out, my left knee does not like pressure of any kind, and the right has been aching up a storm.

I was 42 when I had RNY and am about to turn 50. I have not had to change any of my strategies as far as maintaining my weight goes so far, but I realize that could change in the future. I will say I have become much more active in the past year so maybe that has helped me maintain. I got a fitbit a year ago and that keeps me motivated. I do a lot of walking. Activity does not have to be strenuous to be effective. Walking or water aerobics may be good choices for you.

I have had several friends who have undergone knee replacement surgery. The first year was tough, but now they are all thankful and pain-free. I hope you have the same long-term results!!
