Topic: RE: Today I celebrate my 12th Year Since My WLS

It is wonderful to see others that are more than 5 years out!! I'm at 6 years and I have experienced about a 10 pound bounce back that I struggle with. Congratulations and keep up the good work!!

Just a few more steps to wonderland......and believe me I am taking baby steps (ugh).

Our capacity can increase as the pouch or stomach mature.

Making good choices - proteins +fat + non starchy veggies can help lowering the calories and losing weight.

I am 8 years Post op RNY. I have days that it feels like I can eat a lot. I don't. And if I do get hungry I try to limit my food choices , I.e eat a grill chicken with some non starchy veggies would make me full and it does not "cost me " a lot of calories.  Sure - popcorn or chips my body may want - but chicken or other meat it will get.

At this point - you can stop the weight gain and lose the regain by making smart choices. It is not easy, but it can be done

I can't see insurance company, even if they covered it, any insurance company approving revision because you gained 15lbs.

Start really looking at your food choices , measure and record what and how much you eat.  Good luck.

There are a few people on the DS forum over the years that have had a VSG and then get switched to a DS (the DS is actually a VSG with a duodenal switch). It's harder to resleeve the stomach-due to scar tissue. But you are only 160....maybe if you try to get back on track...you could take of the 15 lbs?

Topic: Enlarged sleeve and possible revision surgery!

I was sleeved in 2012 with a starting weight of 208 - lost 60 lbs, lowest weight ever was 145, now up to 160. I've noticed I can eat so much more, so went to my surgeon. He did an upper GI and found out my sleeve had enlarged over time. UGH. Apparently, it happens...though they don't tell us this when we sign up. I asked him why....did I overeat, did I stretch it? He was very vague and said it was hard to say, probably not, but it was just how my body reacted to the surgery. Now, I have the choice to do nothing and probably keep gaining weight, or to try to get a revision, which he is not sure my insurance will cover. So......feeling blue and confused. So, naturally, I asked what would happen if I did end up getting the revision surgery....would I be back again 4 years later with an enlarged sleeve? And he said "we really don't know." Has anyone else had this experience?

For those times when you really want the decadent stuff: food meditation. I know it sounds corny, but it's gotten me through a million celebrations. I purposefully focus on what I am eating and love the **** out of it, while not allowing myself to think about or dwell on what I can't have. I don't even look at the sugary/fatty stuff so that I can put it out of my mind. Instead I focus on appreciating what I can have.

For those times when it feels like the polite thing to do among colleagues/acquaintances: I have found that when I say warmly and decisively, "I'm good, but thank you very much for offering" with a big, warm smile, the strength of my sincerity and gratitude distracts them from the 'no'. It conveys "this isn't up for discussion" while also essentially praising their care and hospitality.

For those times when it feels like the polite thing to do among close friends/family: Generally these folks (in my life, at least) need a little bit higher level response, since they're the ones who won't take the decisive and warm no. For those people, I level with them ("look, I have worked so hard to get where I am, and you have been so supportive. Please continue to support me in maintaining all of the progress that I've made."). Optional for the ones who just seriously can't get a clue after that line: take a before photo with you and show them to remind them how far you've come. If they still insist, I give them a kiss on the cheek and warmly change the subject.

Good luck! xo

Topic: RE: Drinking Before/After

The  "New" advice I have been hearing at the support group is you can drink up until you eat.  The only reason not to is if you are filling up on liquids and then eating as much as you should.  They still advise not drinking until about 30 min after you eat.

I am in that same boat with everyone else! I had a gastric  sleeve 6 years ago and went from 210lbs down to 105lbs in a year. I am only 5 feet. I kept it off pretty well. Gained some about 10lbs but was okay with 115-117lbs. From last oct to this oct I have gone from 117lb to 140!!! I am officially overweight again and scared to death! I don't want to go back there. I am logging my food, only getting at most 1200 calories a day, and exercising like crazy, 4-6 miles 4x a week + additional stuff. It just seems like the scale goes up everyday. I've gained 8lbs just this past month! I just don't get it. I have also made an appt with the Bariatric doc but it isn't until the 28th and I am petrified that I'll be up ANOTHER 10 pounds by then. I just feel horrible and like a total failure!!

Topic: RE: Food Addiction

Yes, I'm a food addict.

I first hid food in my dresser drawer at age 11. It's been my comfort for a long time. Now, 7 years post op, I can eat pretty much whatever I want but I have indeed recognized addictive eating patterns post op. I have eaten to the point of discomfort, eaten food that I know will make me sick, eaten when I was stressed beyond coping....

I am pretty balanced in general, so at least I see those patterns. A post op I know who has achieved excellent success is active with Overeaters Anonymous. For different reasons, I attend Al Anon and see how some of that wisdom affects my approach to eating.

I maintain a weight about 10 lbs. over my lowest post op weight.
