Topic: RE: 10 years out and gaining, back on here today for motivation!!!

I am 7 years out and have gained nearly 30 lbs back...so angry with myself!  I swore I would never let it happen and here I am again letting food and my weight completely consume my life!  Earlier this year I started using the Lose It app and lost 7 lbs...stopped using it and gained it all back plus a few so I'm going back to using it starting tomorrow.  I'm also going to buy a bicycle...I used to love riding my bike as a kid and am hoping if I'm doing something I love then I will keep doing it...I need the exercise so bad!  I know I'm eating the wrong things but just can't seem to stop myself...my  biggest issue is eating at night, it's like I can't go to sleep unless I eat something!  And I can also eat way more than I could even 2-3 yrs after surgery and I rarely dump.  I came back to OH for motivation, but I know I won't be on here very often.  I'm also on facebook under Denise Garcia and I live in Monticello Arkansas, you're welcome to send a friend request...maybe we can motivate each other?!

Thanks for your info.  Insurance companies can be such a pain. (I work for one, so I can say that-LOL!)  Good luck with your other surgeries.

Thank you for this information.  Because of how I've always carried my weight I *know* this will be one I'll have to have and I'm going to keep your words in mind and document, document, document.  Thanks again.

Topic: RE: how long after WLS do you losing the weight?

Hi,

I am new to this as well (surgery June 2).  The one thing I have learned from spending hours upon hours doing research is that everyone's experience is different.  You are 21 days out and I completely understand your concern... I don't know what I was expecting but I did have expectations after surgery.  Your body is in shock right now and given that you are only 3 weeks out you aren't able to nearly eat anything close to what you were eating before.  Are you logging your food on myfitnesspal.com?  There is a phone app as well..  I totally suggest doing this from this day forward.  I stalled out 3 weeks post op and did not lose anything until the end of week 4...  but I promise, if you follow the protein guidelines and fluid intake recommendations YOU WILL DROP THE WEIGHT.  I went from 20 pounds down to 43 pounds down in 2 weeks (by the end of week 5).

About Hershey..  keep in mind also that by this time you will only be 5 weeks out which is where I am at right now.  I would not want to be jostled about by rides at this point.  I experienced a bought of severe nausea for about 2 weeks and am just getting over it.  It will be hot and if you are not accustomed to the heat and the exercise you may have a hard time of it.

Topic: RE: Hiatal hernia advice

You don't mention where you did your hiatal hernia research, but I have a LOT of medical problems and all of my Dr.'s tell me never to trust any medical advice on the internet unless it comes from WebMD, or the Mayo clinic's website.  (everything in itallicas I coppied directly from Webmd to make sure i didn't get anything wrong)

I can't speak to the banding issue, since I had RNY but I do know there are 2 different types of hiatal hernias:  sliding (my grandma had this type of Hiatial hernia for 62 years without any problems)  and paraesophageal (next to the esophagus).

"In a sliding hiatal hernia, the stomach and the esophagus slide up into the chest through the hiatus. This is the more common type of hernia. Generally, sliding hiatal hernias pose no threat to a person's health unless you develop symptoms of GERD."  (This type is usually just treated with medication as your research indicated)

"Paraesophageal hernias are less common but are more cause for concern. The esophagus and stomach stay in their normal locations, but part of the stomach squeezes through the hiatus, landing it next to the esophagus. Although you can have this type of hernia without any symptoms, the danger is that the stomach can become "strangled," or have its blood supply shut off."  --I am guessing it is this type of hernia that you have and that the part of your stomach where the band is was at least a part of the hernia (which would be why it was suddenly too tight after so many years of being fine)  and that is why he wants to surgically repair the hernia, before refilling the band.

Topic: RE: Plastic/Skin Surgery

I was told by my insurance company in my RNY approval letter in 2008 that they WOULD NOT pay for any subsequent skin removal surgery even if deemed medically necessary.  And in 2011 when I had 16 pounds of skin removed during my Medically necessary Circumfrential lower body lift (I was litterally bruising my thighs when I walked from the skin hitting me) they did indeed hold to that decision.  My plastic Surgeon charged me $16,000 to remove that 16 pounds.  But becasue of that I had to choose just the abdomen, and not all the other parts that I want done, and will prolly never be able to have done now.  Especially since I am now unemployed and have had to spend of other more important surgeries (double hip, double knee replacements, and arthritis clean outs in shoulders, elbows, and as of yesterday an Ankle)  So i still haven't had my arms, breasts or thighs done.

BUT if you were not given any restrictions like that , then as long as you have medical necessity proven for it it should be fairly easy, unless your insurance denies all plastics no mater why.

Document any skin problems thru your doctor NOW.  Get Rx for them.  I lost 150 pounds and didn't need to have my stomach done (go figure) but did have arms done.  Easy surgery.  No pain at all and very pleased with results.  Needed face done but had filler in cheeks and lips.  No pain.  I am 68 years old.

Woo Hoo! You are getting back on the path. I feel like it is going to be a much harder road for us then it was in the early years. But I hate how I feel and how I look right now. Especially when I look at pictures from when I reached my goal weight or when I read my old journal entries from the first 2-3 years.

I want to slap myself for complaining that "I only lost 3lbs. this week.", please get over yourself, I think to myself as I read them. It is good to connection with people who are over 8 years out and not perfect. Are struggling like I am to get back on track and don't have the new pouch glow to them.
