Topic: RE: Weight Gain

I'm so sorry to hear you are having a hard time. Have you been back to your surgeon? I would start there. He may need a look at your pouch. I went from about 289 to 135, stayed at 145-150 for years then up to 170! I went nuts. So I went back to basics, protein, protein , protein. Veggies , water, no sugar, basically Atkins . I'm back to 145-150. You can do it , I refused to buy bigger clothes. So I walked around shoved into the same old stretchy crap that I could barely fit into until I worked my way down. I hate exercise so walking is good for me as is the balance ball, you can watch tv or use the iPad and not even realize you are using your muscles moving around. But do rule out pouch problem first, my friend had to have his tightened.

By the way I had surgery in 2000. I'm 64. good luck and GOD bless,

Rose

Topic: RE: Eating every 3 hours?

I have severe RH and I do eat often.. but I finally figured it out what works for me and my RH...That may not work for you - but you may try it.

My diet is very restricted due to food allergies and IBS_C .  That plus RH really limits my options.  However it is now working great and I am learning to adapt. I still have my "moments" when I say "heck with it", and eat food that I know I should avoid... but any "bad choices" and I may be sick -or in pain for 2-3 days after... so my food indiscretions better be worth it..

I follow low carb paleo style diet - with no dairy (allergies) , soy (allergies) and no grains (that is my IBS plus RH) Eliminating grains really helped me a lot.  I may have some quinoa - maybe once every 3-4 months..

Due to my RH I had to eliminate starchy carbs and veggies..(potatoes, cooked carrots,  beets, etc). DUe to RH and IBS- the only fruits I eat are berries..  yea-I told you it is a very restrictive diet...

but it works for me.. for my RH and my gut issues...

I eat eggs, meat and fish, non starchy veggies (so many of them); nuts and seeds (some of them ) are great addition..  I almost always have them around. They are my "go to food" to balance my RH..

I even eat LNS - just before bed - typically a handful of nuts - 5-6 brazil nuts with 5-7 macadamia nuts.. (or more). Nuts digest slowly and keep my BS very stable all night long... and even longer.. And they do not give me sour stomach by the morning. .

If I eat carbs (fruits or more veggies)   - I try to eat them in mid day - that way I can control my BS...

My diet follows: for every 10 gr of proteins I need to eat at least 5 -10 gr of good fats (bacon !!!, mayo-soy free; avocado, coconut oil, seeds and nuts.) etc, and no more than 5 gr of carbs..

ratio: 10: more than 5-10 : less than 5 (protein + fat + carbs )

The fat helps my body maintain steady BS.

If i eat fruits (berries) _ I always eat them at least 3 -5 hrs before bed..and always with fats and proteins (nuts, coconut cream,  etc)

Topic: do anyone know anywhere to get free vitamins

I have my surgery on September 16,2014 and is very scared because I do not have any of the vitamins that I will need for the gastric bypass surgery. I have been reading a lot of posts about taking the vitamins are very important. Is the vitamins really that important to have after surgery.

So sorry you're having problems. A few questions: when did you last have labs run? How were your levels? What vitamins are you taking? How many grams of protein do you eat every day?

If you haven't already, you need to post on the DS board here, or join some of the DS-specific FB groups.

Topic: Weight Gain

Hi,

I had gastric bypass surgery in October of 2010.  My lowest weight was 188 pounds.  I am now at 217 pounds.  Can anybody out there help me?  If you have gained weight how did you get back on track?  Please advise.

Thank you!

Topic: RE: Vitamin D Levels - Muscle aches and pains

I had both of my knees replaced in 2003 and upon returning to work (in the construction trade), I developed severe foot pain in both of my feet from being on my feet all day.

I went through hell for two years addressing my foot pain, having steroid injections, orthotics, sound shock therapy, and nitrogen injections in the heel of my feet to kill the nerves in my heels, (the nerves grow back in about 6 months time). Tried everything short of having foot surgery.

Then I finally consulted with the orthopedic surgeon who did my knee replacements, and he did a blood test to see what my Vitamin D count was, and in the meantime told me to take 2000 IU's of Vitamin D and 2000 IU's Calcium Citrate everyday, and scheduled me to return for my blood work (on the vitamin D count) results in two weeks.

In less than that time my foot pain disappeared completely!!! I mean totally disappeared!! I couldn't believe it.

Upon my scheduled follow up appointment with my orthopedic surgeon, he explained that, medical studies have shown that almost everyone in the U.S. of A is Vitamin D deficient (unless you reside in the sunbelt states), and that studies have shown, maintaining proper Vitamin D levels and Calcium Citrate often rids the body of unexplained bone pain.

Turns out I was severely deficient in Vitamin D, and since then take, 5000 IU's of Vitamin D & 4000 IU's of Calcium Citrate on a daily basis.

Word of caution though on the Vitamin D.

Excessive Vitamin D can be toxic so it is important to get your Vitamin D level checked, via a simple blood test.

Calcium Citrate is harmless, & your body will excrete what it does not use, the same as it does with Vitamin C.

I have recommended this to others who have been troubled with unexplained foot/heel pain and numerous others have had the same positive results, and are now pain free!

I would highly recommend consulting this approach with your doctor before trying this remedy.

Funny thing is...if I stop taking the Vita D & Calcium Citrate for a couple of weeks, I can feel the heel pain returning. so I stay on the Vita D & CC.

Topic: RE: Vitamin D Levels - Muscle aches and pains

Sorry, I know this post is older but I have a question. I started taking vitamin d in the spring around March. After only about a month I developed a severe case of tendonitis in my arm. I was in excruciating pain for 2 months. I started taking a higher dose of vitamin d3 about a month into that pain. So once the tendonitis finally started to heal, I started noticing my right elbow was sore, now it has been sore for almost 3 months. I also started noticing pain in my feet and pain in my legs. I stopped the vitamin d thinking those as the cause, but the pain is not gone. I am miserable! When I started taking the vitamin d my level was a 17, now it is a 45. Quite an improvement, but I am more miserable now than I ever was before taking it. Please tell me where to go from here. Thanks!

Topic: RE: 7 Years out and Regain - Suggestions for protein consumption

Great advice above... Just wanted to add good for you for being proactive, getting back online and reaching out for help. You will be a great role model for your Grandchildren too... living healthy!

I'd suggest getting your labs done if you haven't in awhile, have a chat with your surgeon about getting back on track (he/she may want to check for any mechanical failures of the surgery) and if you are on any medications see if those could have weight gain as a side effect. Make an appt w/ a nutritionist, maybe a therapist too... you know get your team together.

I personally do 50% of my day protein, I am a little more strict on carbs because my job is a sit down job and though I build in lots of movement in my day I still sit a lot more than i would like. You are welcome to take a look at my blog (8+ years of post weight loss surgery food menus and recipes, maybe give you a few new ideas)

Best wishes to you. Keep posting and if you have a real world support group get involved in that... keeps your head in the game.
