Topic: 5 years post VSG...I'm still skinny!

Well....skinnier than I USED to be! Hey y'all....it has been ages since I posted an update. I had my 5 year surgiversary on 9/1 ....(oops i'm a bit late!) I am maintaining 95% of the 350lbs I originally lost! ( had a lil regain this past year after several foot surgeries) Life is great...my health is great (still off all my meds) I have great restriction still....and very little hunger. I take my vites and have labs done every 6 months (no deficiencies so far)

I still eat according to the WLS guidelines ( protein, veggies...then starch) I AM however a big believer in "moderation" AFTER I reached goal I started practicing my "moderation" eating plan (basically 90% "on plan" foods...10% "off plan" foods) This works for me and until it no longer "serves" my lifestyle...I'm sticking with it!

My life is so different now then it was at 600lbs! I don't worry about my weight holding me back.  I no longer make decisions (big or small) based on my weight, mobility, or size limitations.  Before my sleeve ALL my decisions....from where I ate, shopped, worked, traveled etc....were based on accommodating my size. Those worries are a thing of the past...it is so liberating!

So many things have changed for me through this amazing journey....I moved from California to Georgia cuz I met the love of my life (we're getting married in a couple weeks!) We met in a round about way here on OH! She had her 3 year surgiverary last Sunday.  This surgery has changed both our live and brought us together.....healthier, happier, and full of hope for a great future together.

Thanks to all my OH friends for you friendship and support over the years....it means a lot to me.  Thanks to those who took time to read this long ass post...may your journey take you to amazing places like mine did!

I think it really depends on you.  So far, I have had zero problem allowing myself the occasional less than optimal choice.  I have sushi every other month or so, for example.  I had some of a piece of cheesecake when I was at GenCon a few weeks ago.  But those things do NOT release the kraken or anything.  For some people, they do.

I do, however, journal everything, and that does help me to be mindful of the choices I'm making and it probably helps to keep me in check.

This is how I live as well.  I eat what I like in small quantities, journal all of it and work my faves into my day. Food journaling and exercise helps me manage the beast. Knowing I'm hitting my nutritional goals and not blowing over my calories for the day eliminates guilt and therefore cravings. I lost the weigh post-op living this way, I see no reason why I can't continue to maintain my success in the same way.

Personally, I eat what I like in small quantities now and have had great success!  I've had to make adjustments to get adequate protein and not over eat, but I absolutely have my favorites and work them into my day without guilt because I'm getting my nutrients and I'm not over on calories! I control the quantity and exercise now. It's what works for me!

I had gastric bypass October 2008. I went from 263 to 140. Now i'm back up to 180. I'm very depressed, I do work out but no matter what I do, I can't seem to lose this weight. I want to lose 30 lbs. my clothes are so tight, but I refuse to buy more. Any advice appreciated. thanks.

Topic: Worried aabout "mourning food".

I just read a post from a few days ago that mentioned "mourning food". I'm currently in the process of preparing for gastric sleeve surgery which  will prob be in Dec or Jan. I have to confess, I have worried about how I will feel when my reality is that I  can NEVER have another pizza, or cheeseburger, or pint of ice cream, etc. All of us got where we are (or were) by eating too much and it's often the sweet, salty or spicy comfort foods that put on most of the excess weight. In  preparation for surgery I've cut way back on sweets, white carbs, greasy stuff like chips etc. However, currently I know if I REALLY wanted one, I could go get a burger or pizza or whatever. My daughter (who is wise) suggested I begin planning for other ways to soothe anxiety and "comfort myself" when those foods are no longer an option.  Anybody had trouble with "mourning food" after surgery? What strategies work for you to replace food when you need  comfort, reward, feel like celebrating, etc? I think my best defense will be a good offense and I need to learn how others have dealt with this.

Hey sweetie, I know just how you feel. I had my RNY surgery back in 2009. I went from 215 to 93 pounds. I am back up to 150 now. I am looking for support, help, and motivation from this forum. I know I have stretched out my pouch because of the amount of food I can eat. I can't give you advice about how to get back on track because I need the same help. However, I can be here to help support you and motivate you :)

No big deal! Get yourself to a hematologist for some iron treatment and all will be well again. It happens to a lot of RNY patients. I am 10 years post-op and still need an iron infusion every once in awhile (just had one yesterday). The best thing is that you will feel better right away! It's nice not to feel exhausted and cold.
