Thank you for this truly generous and thoughtful response.  I especially appreciated your advice about making sure I have my blood work to individualize my supplements to my actual needs, and to listen to my body. Really, this was so helpful.  Thank you.

Topic: 13 YEARS AFTER RNY, BAD STOMACH PAIN AND NO HELP FROM DOC

Hi all. I belonged to this group 13 years ago when I had my original RNY surgery. That was in 2002. In 2007 I had to have revision surgery because of 3 ulcers on my staple line. Everything went well, I had lost 175 lbs., and had no problems after that. About a year ago I started having the same type pain I had with the ulcers in 07. I went to see my surgeon, and he treated me terribly. I was a smoker at the time, I KNOW, and he told me he could not do anything for me. No more revisions, nothing!! So. I stopped smoking, and have done pretty well, however now when ever I take my "meds", and I take several because I am a diabetic, and several other health problems I take meds for, my stomach starts burning and I have stabbing pains. Not always, but about twice a week or so. The only thing that eases the pain is MILK. That makes me think I have ulcers again. I take Omneprizole every day, but It doesn't seem to help. I will NOT got back to my original surgeon after the way he treated me last time, but it is hard for me to believe that something can't be done surgically for this. My question is, has anyone that is this far out after an RNY suffered with ulcers and had revision surgery, and can you have that done more than once? My doctor said NO, but he also acted like there was just no hope and I would probably just die from it. I swear.....and I think it was because I was a smoker at the time, and he didn't want to give me the time of day. I am looking for a new Gastric doc, but I'm scared to death that nothing can be done now, and this "pouch" is just gonna burst one day, and that will be it. He really did scare the bejeepes out of me, and made me afraid to approach any doctor with this. I would appreciate anyones imput about this problem. Thanks.....Fronie

You're right, I don't believe that all of your labs are actually good with taking Flinstones.  Sorry.

I completely understand how you feel. I had a really hard time with all of the extra skin. I finally was able to get an extended tummy tuck in Aug, and I just had my arms done in Dec. That has completely changed to way I look at myself. Is plastic surgery an option for you?

I don't think there are vitamib as minerals that are not important...

There are some that are more critical than others, because low levels of them can cassie permanat damage to nerves, bones, muscles...etc.  However some of them also can get critically too high, almost toxic.

That's why. It is critical to know your current levels and monitor some of not most that can be toxic when too high, while others needs to be IMO at least in mid or high normal range (my personal experience) for me to feel good.

Some that i think are critical

Vit B12, B1 - essential for nerves and low levels may lead to permant dammage or death. Very low toxicity even at high values.

Vit A, K, D - those are fat soluble...very critical, but if over supplemented can become really toxic, and cause a lot of problem.

B6 - water soluble....really important, but toxic when numbers too high.

VIt, K1:K1 and K2 -both are very critical...K1 has to be monitored because it may cause clotting so people with heart issue, or with clotting -need to be supper careful when they take that one; K2 is more responsible for bone formation and tissue repair...but again..be very careful when supplementing.

Minerals: salt, calcium, magnesiun, boron,  copper, potasium, iron...these are the one that most people talk about.

Taking calcium with not enough of D, K2, magnesiun, and other minerals - would, IMO not really help us to get best bones. We need all of them (in different qty) for proper bones formation.

I take Centrum or equivalent (CVS spectravite).. Plus B12, calcium citrate, magnesium, D3 (dry), K2 ,B1 (additional) , use good quality sea salt. And few more based on my personal blood work.

I used to take b- complex, but my B6 went off the charts..so now i just add the Bs that I feel i need the most.

I eat "real food"...

I can't stress enough to make sure you get tested and get copy of your results to make sure your numbers are not just "OK". Barely normal does not work for me.

Iron - my gut does not tolerate oral iron, nor i can really absorb it. After 3 years - i become deficient (and i don't have a period) and now when my ferritin drops below 30...i get iron infusions...(i am very lucky to have a great hema doc who understands my issues and works with me). But i hate the IV, plus i get a lot of side effects, and it costs me $$$ and time to get infused.

Unless your iron is really high, and high ferritins - supplementing iron is really important, IMO. (Testing just iron without ferritin is, imo, pointless. Ferritin are the iron savings.

(I have IBS and oral iron makes my gut cramps for hour...really really badly - cry in pain bad - narco bad...)

Hi, H.a.l.a. B.!  Can you direct me to  a complete list of critical vits/minerals I need?  This is a concern to me, but I am not sure what, exactly, I need, beyond the basic multi, b12, and calcium citrate.  My surgeon does not specify a particular multi...just says to take one.  I have felt pretty good about the quality of the ones I  am taking, but a feeling is just a feeling.  Without any list to compare against, I am not sure.  I have noticed that PoetKelly also seems quite knowledgeable about this, and I will post to her as well.  Thanks!

I was where you are now - my doc was telling me my numbers were "good" "normal" while in fact they were borderline OK and not really optimal for me..  eventually my borderline numbers caused me to get anemia, and depression, and feel like crap..

Only after one well experienced veteran RNY looked at my numbers and suggested I take more critical vits (and get myself to hematologist get IV iron) I started feeling like myself again.

"Normal" may not be good enough for some if not most of us..
