Topic: Severe abdominal bloating for the last 3 years... Why???

Hi friends! I had WLS in Nov of 2010. I got down to 119lb, but am now sporting a healthier 150lb. I've had multiple complications over the last 4.5 years, including  bowel obstruction and hernia repair (emergency surgery-yay), gallbladder removal, two exploratories (one lap and one open), sigmoid colon resection due to a presumed volvus, chronic abdominal pain cited from adhesions which led to having a spinal cord stimulator placed, and more EGD's and CTs than I care to count. Oh and let's not forget the 10 hour small bowel study. That was awesome. It showed that scar tissue had encased my small bowel and confined it to the left side of my abdomen, preventing fluid movement of pretty much anything. Despite all of that, I continue to have SEVERE abdominal bloating to the extreme of looking 8-9 months pregnant. The scans don't show a definitive blockage or ileus-just the trapped air. I have cut ties with my original surgeon for many many reasons, some of which you just read. I have an appt upcoming with a bariatric, colorectal/GI surgical specialist at Wake Forrest Baptist Med Center. I also have the joy of being scheduled for a colonoscopy and EGD again next month. Has anyone experienced any of this??? Particularly the bloating???  There is no timely relation to food, my cycle, or anything I can pinpoint. The only relief is laying on my side for a good two hours to relax the bowel and allow the air to pass. It's excruciatingly painful and meds are useless. Ideas???  Anyone in the same boat?!? I'm truly going mad!

It took me a long time to get my head on straight and get down to business. Wishing don’t make it so. Making a plan and sticking with it does make it so.

I came back here for the support I know I need. The people here understand what it’s like to have those cookies calling from the kitchen. It helps to post and share and offer support to others.

I record what I eat every day. There are a lot of websites and/or apps to record your daily intake. Decide on the numbers your going for. Know what the numbers of the food you are going to eat before you eat it to avoid surprises.

I plan my food for the day and somewhat for the week. Have the foods you should be eating ready. If you plan to eat raw veggies have them cut up and ready to go.

No drinking for 30 minutes after eating. Even a mouth cleansing sip makes a difference.

at the end of the day I pat myself on the back for doing a great job for the day. If you slip up and eat something off your daily plan accept that and move forward. The entire day is not lost because you ate one thing you shouldn’t have.

Good luck and keep sharing, it really does help.

They answered me today . So they would  be there for each other in the hospital, I just kept quiet. I am too independent to think like that. I needed my husband once the nurses, morphine, and hospital beds were gone. And even then just for one day. They are bickering, because of the mental situation.

Thanks for your input. They survived, they were not prepared. They have a long way to go, I just shake my head...

I don't restrict anything and just stick to eating "healthy"... I aim for my lean proteins, fiber, veggies, fruits and whole grains.. but of course still white carbs/junky foods.. for me the key is moderation and not getting out of control.

Id say I eat 1/2 a typical restaurant sized meal... I don't weigh/measure any more so its hard to say.. also depends on what I am eating how quickly I will get full. I feel I eat "normal" compared to most people.. however if I eat around somebody who doesn't know I had WLS they usually comment at how little I eat.. or how I only eat 1/2 etc. I like feeling satisfied more than I like feeling full... to me when I fell full its usually over full and not comfortable..

For me it started with going back to support groups.  We all know what to do, but I needed help and support in doing the next right thing.  I met with a dietician to work out a plan I could live with.  I had to re-visit some old habits -- not drinking with meals; weighing and measuring food; eating 6 small meals a day; drinking water; adding exercise.  It felt too overwhelming to do everything all at once, even though that's certainly how it was right after surgery.  When I got back on track, I really had to take one small step at a time.
