Hello Family.... I will be 2 years post op April 9th. Ive lost 135 lbs, Ive went from being 240 lbs to 105 lbs. Ive been having some female issues and I went and seen my GYN yesterday. He metioned me needing a hysterctomy. My question is... He kept talking about me maybe not healing really good after surgery due to malnutrition?????? I told him I have been to my gastric doc and all my blood work was good. But he kept telling me that I may not heal as well as others due to malnutrition..... Said he just wanted me to know, that I had to consider everything. Has any of you all had a hysterctomy after weight loss??? If so how did you do???? ANY & ALL input on the subject will be helpful... Thank you so much Shelia

shelia- i had mine before wls so i cannot help there but i have to think your doc needs some education in wls- he is confusing malnutrition with malabsorption! or he has no clue!or both! personally; i would think that you would heal better now with the beenfits of less weight and the additional protein that we require yes; you need to consider everything but the most important thing would be to weigh the beenfits of the surgery vs the continuing probs--i am over 50 so i look at female issues differently than someone younger but i would say talk to your wls doc- talk to your nut ...get another opinion if you aren't comfy with this doc- just figure it out and get it done if it is needed. after wls; i would think a hysterectomy would be a piece of cake! sorry for the food pun.....

wls does not equal malnutrition. If you are eating properly and taking your vitamins. I will use myself as an example. I eat great, I take multivits, b-complex, iron and calcium. (no protein shakes either) My dr says my labs are better than most people who have not had wls. if you feel up to it and he is educate-able give it your best shot, or find a dr who is knowledgeable.

I had a total hysterectomy in January due to my ovarian cancer. I healed just fine. In fact, my doctor was amazed how fast I healed. I think it was due to the fact I was in good physical shape -- both from losing 145 pounds and from exercising regularly. I even had to have the surgery open with an 11-inch scar -- so much for my lap RNY with tiny, tiny scars. Many times, they can do the hysterectomy lap as well and then you'll heal even faster. I still did great. Good luck to you! Joni @ goal 295/145

Joni--There you are! I have been wondering how you have been doing. How are you? How is the chemo going? I hope things are better for you. Please try and stop by occasionally and update us. I was ready to send out an APB on you. Thinking of you

Hi Joni, I agree with Lynda I have been thinking and praying for you. It's great to see you on the boards. Hope all is going well. I know it's hard to keep up with everything, but it is great to "see" you again Best wishes Rita

Hi Shelia, I had a hysterectomy about 14 months post-op. I had no trouble and especially no regrets. I am a happy member of the "white pants club". I only wish I could have had it years ago. I was struggling with heavy bleeding (which at 320 pounds was a hygenic "challenge"). It was actually my pursuit of a hysterectomy that started me on the road to WLS. My gynecologist agreed that it was time for the hysterectomy, but said she couldn't recommend an elective surgery at my weight. The risk outweight the benefit. She said "lose a hundred pounds and I will give you your hysterectomy". Well I lost 176 pounds! While no surgery is fun, getting one at such a reduced weight was so much easier! I felt possitively small in the bed, and getting up to walk without all of that weight pulling down was much better. I did find that I underestimated the need to recover. Mine went great and I had no complications. I did need to rest and allow time to get back my energy. Just because it wasn't as BIG as by-pass surgery didn't mean it was nothin and I wouldn't feel it, which is what I mean about underestimating it. Still, when I compare the few days of recovery to messing with the symptoms that led me to get the hysterectomy, it was worth it! I healed really well, and I felt that my post-op nutrition being so healthy, and my close monitoring of my labs and health, along with my increased excercise habits all contributed to it going well. My PCP said she has never had a patient regret getting one. I consider it another benefit of my by-pass surgery. Being thin AND not getting periods anymore...well things are getting too good! Patty
