Help - Need Fosamax
I have just been told that my bone density has decreased and I need to be on some medication for it, like Fosamax. I contacted my surgeon's office and the nurse told me she did ot think I could take it because you need to drink a minimum of 8 oz of water with the pill in one sitting and she did not think the pouch would be able to handle that kind of liquid in that short of time. I am really nervous because my mild osteopenia has now gone to moderate and I really need something. Has anyone taken or is taking something like Fosamax? Please let me know.

I know a couple post ops that are taking it - they don't have a problem. They drink as much as they can when they take it and keep drinking after the pill goes down. One is a 6 years post op the other about 4 years out.
I take Fosomax. No problem. Drink as you are able. Just take it first thing in the morning once a week and drink what you can. Wait an hour and continue your day. Don't lay down, this is one drug that will irritate the esophagus(sp) if you lie down. It is definitely a worthwhile drug. I have been on it for years.

I've been taking it for 3 months now. My surgeon is the one who prescribed it. I take it first thing on Saturday morning. I can drink a cup of water at one time, so that is what I take it with. If you can't do the whole cup, just do your best. Sit upright for an hour, then go on with the rest of your day.
I was concerned when I started taking it that it would bring back my heartburn, but I've not noticed anything at all in that area.
Good luck,

I am taking actonel, which is in the same class as fosamax and is taken the same way. I personally have no problem drinking the 6-8 OZ of water with the pill, you can spread the water out over a few minutes if need be. I also approved this at my 3 year gastric bypass followup with the surgeon who is taking care of me for followup at Barix. ( my surgery Dr moved to AZ) It is important to take it when you are up, and stay up right for at least 30 minutes after taking it. Do not take any supplements at the same time or any food for at least 30 minutes.
What I do is take it immediately after I get up every Tuesday. then I hop in the shower, do my stuff and by the time I am washed, shaved, dried and dressed it is at least 30 minutes before I get downstairs to make breakfast.
It is really no big deal.
