new and help
Hello,
I just discovered that this list existed from AMOS site. I couldn't sign on fast enough. I just hope I did it right. I has RNY 4.5 yrs ago. I have had little "episodes" and big "events" over the last couple of years. As soon as I started to tolerate sugar - I did all I could. I had a grand mal seizure and have been treated for epilepsy ever since. In the past year I have passed out several times. Bottom line - my blood sugars were dropping into the 40's. Yesterday I learned that I have Reactive Hypoglycemia. They are putting me on a drug called ACORBOSE to control the release of glucose into my system. Apparently my pancreas disassociates from the rest of me. I eat (usually when high carbs) my blood sugar goes to 300 - 1 to 2hrs later it drops to 40. Problem with the drug is that the doctor says it causes flatulance (Great! I don't know if thats a good trade off) I just need some input. I hope you guys get this.
Peggy
Peggy,
I have trouble with my blood sugar since my WLS. I must start everyday with protein or about noon my blood sugar starts to drop fast. Always remember to have protein first at every meal and limit carbs to a minimum. I stay away from all flour products except occasional whole grains. I hope this helps. Carol
Hi Peggy, I'm not too far down state! I don't know a lot about epilepsy so please forgive this question--was the excess sugar a contributing factor with the seizure? I can't tolerate sugars at all. I do get the shakes if I don't eat right--usually on the weekends since when I'm at home I don't stick to a schedule very well. I have a protein drink, and in about 10 minutes I'm good. I have no idea if this would help you with your pancreas. As for flatulance, hmmmmm....well...being lactose intolerant and unable to tolerate fats or sugar alcohals---I definately know about this. As "anoying" as it can be---I think the trade off would be worth it for the chance at better health. Maybe Gas-x would help counter that. Please let us know how things go--good luck Bek
That's very interesting to me.... Every 3-4 days I get shaky and kind of faint. It's not dumping - that's a totally different feeling. And it doesn't happen after I eat. But I *feel* like "okay, you're gteting that weird shaky thing. GO EAT SOMETHING!" Andthen it usually settles down. I wonder....
I'm also 4.5 years out, by the way.
Thanks for all the great responses. I am finding that my problem is certainly not unique. As far as the relationship of LBS to seizures - I absolutely believe that there is a connection between the two. My grand mal seizure happened when I was 2 1/2 years out and first started to eat a lot of sugar because I did not feel like I was dumping. And all the " seizures" I have had in the past 2 years have identical symptoms to my low blood sugar events. I don't doubt that I initially had a seizure but it was because of the LBS. I have a very obnoxious neurologist who is not considering that possibility. He has me on a megadose of anti-seizure med refuses to admit that maybe all the increases were not necessary. He won't allow me to tell him my opinions. He sssh's me when I try to explain things to him. Or he'll hold his hand up to tell me to shut up when he is writing. He even went so far as to tell me that my MRI from 2 years ago had some other abnormalities but he didn't choose to share them with me. So I just happen to know that many of us post RNY folks are very stubborn and we get what we want. I plan to fire him as soon as all the blood sugar stuff gets under control. By the way I took 2 of the pills already and my sugar did not jump to 300 after a meal or drop to the 50's and the better news is that I didn't even ----.
