I just started Effexor XR, my Prozac after 4 years has lost it's "boost". I am 4 1/2 years post op. I have only been on it a week, beginning at 37.5 mg. My surgeon and pharmacist both indicated that I should not have any problem with XR. Does anyone have any experience with being on Effexor XR for a few years post op without it causing increased apetite or difficulty with absorbtion. Any other information is really welcome. Thanks so much.

hi, i have been on effexor xr for approx. 7 years. I did gain alot of weight pre-op on it. After surgery it was not a factor. I do remember I was ravenous on it. I did take prozac for many years before effexor and the same thing happened. I don't know what the surgery did but appetite has never been the same and i feel like my normal self (almost like a teenager) again. I do have to tell you that i am going off effexor since i have been on it so long. I noticed it is starting to not work as well for me so I will be switching to celexa and hoping it works as well as effexor did for me. Everybody i have talked to post op about effexor has not gained weight with it so I hope this helps you.

Isn't the xr time release? If so, you might not get full effects of it. darlene

I tryed the XR for two months....and never got any help from it.....I too was a prozac gal, and it quit working too Anyways....after two months of being miserable my doc believed me and switched me to the SR twice a day......works much better I have been on that for a couple months and feel tons better......I have actually lost a few pounds, but have been trying, and I actually have some libido back Some people say it works, some it doesn't......we can never tell who will absorb what....it is all about trial and error.....but if you don't start feeling a little better by 3-4 weeks, I would ask for the regular stuff twice a day or something......And a side note~The XR was a 20 copay, and the regular was only 5.....so I thought what a deal, it works better and is way cheaper Take Care and good luck Jesi by the way I am over 2 years out

After many years on Prozac I switched to Effexor XR pre op. I had a lot of side affects. I have been on Lexapro since surgery and it works really well for me. Laurie
