Vein Problems after WLS

Approximately 8 months after WLS, during which I had lost over 100 pounds, I developed severe leg cramping at night, and also have bulging veins in both legs (left is worse than right). I went to my PCP *****ferred me to a specialist. I immediately changed my eating habits and watched for foods heavy in potassium to avoid them. I've been wearing the stockings (fun - NOT) and now have surgery scheduled to have the left leg done by lazer. The specialist told me he doesn't have any other patients that he's aware of that had WLS and this problem. So, just thought I'd check here to see if anyone else has experienced this. Thanks for your time.

Hmmmm, well I never really associated my "condition" with WLS. I get bad cramps in my left ankle & foot at night---it wakes me up from a deep sleep. But I had gout when I was younger and bigger and have poor circulation and joint damage from it. As for the veins, well accross my right knee it looks like a worm is sitting there. My Dr says the veins are bad from my pre-surgery weight, but now since there is no more fat for them to hide behind, they are "exposed". I also have noticble spider veins on my feet and ankles--not real yukky-- but they're there. But hey--I went from no ankles and a size 9-9/12 xtra wide to little ankles and 7/12-8 narrow. Again, the veins do not have anything to hide behind. Good luck having yours removed. Mine are not considersed a medical neccesity, so I get by---and hey, for me---I'll take the veins instead of the weight! Have a great weekend!!! Bek

I used to get really bad foot and ankle cramps at night. I stopped drinking anything with Nutrasweet and the cramps went away. After I dt-toxed from the Nutrasweet, I drank a soda, and whammo, cramps. That stuff is nasty. You might want to try elimating it from your diet and see if that helps. The nutrasweet in SF pudding doesn't seem to bother me, just drinks. There is probably more in that.
