Interesting reaction...
While attending a women's retreat this past weekend many learned about my wls for the first time. When she heard about my weight loss one of the ladies, a non-practicing MD, at my dinner table asked me if I was doing a point counting weight loss program. I replied, No, that I had done it for 2 years but only lost a small portion of what I needed to lose and couldn't seem to lose any more in spite of my vigilance & obsessive record keeping. When asked how I lost so much weight I told her I'd had gastic bypass surgery about a year ago. This gal got the strangest look on her face and said she was glad to hear that it worked for me, then immediately turned to talk to the woman seated beside her. She really looked like she wanted to say something totally different but bit her tongue and didn't. I appreciated her restraint, but really wonder what she wanted to say & didn't. If she has any of the misconceptions that many doctors have, I would have welcomed the chance to possibly educate her about wls.
On a funny note - I shared a condo with my best friend and 2 other ladies. I was in a class with one of the other ladies for several years, but don't see her much now that we're in different classes. When we bumped into each other at our dinner meeting, she began introducing herself to me. As I shook her hand I told her, "Yes, I know you, but you probably don't recognize me. I'm Vickie J... and we were in Bob's class together for several years." Her jaw dropped and she said, "I thought you were someone else that just happened to have the same name!!"
It is just too funny how some folks react to seeing us after we've lost weight, isn't it???

Vickie--You have done so great--who cares what someone else thinks--whether she is a doc or not! Ya know I know a lot of docs and one thing I do know--they do not know it all--despite the fact that they tend to think they do . Really prejudice against the MO seems to be the last acceptable form of prejudice. I guess we can't really blame people for not understanding what we go through or the complexities of being MO and what got us there. Weight is such an issue for so many people--I guess it is understandable that people think that what works for normal weight people would work for MO. While it is true that eating less and exercising will result in weight loss for everybody--I just truly believe that there is more involved for most of us.
Anyway--congrats on your success and hopefully your long term success will show people that wls does work for some people.
Lynda,
I hope that I can be successful in the long run, partially so folks can see that wls does work and not everyone gains their weight back. I know most folks gain back 15-20% of their weight loss, but I hope I'm one of the ones that gains back very little, but certainly no more than that!
Did you tell me your ps was Dr. Shuster or Dr. Revis? I have a consultation with Dr. Shuster next week but Dr. Revis is booked until May!! I don't want to wait that long so unless he has a cancelation for Monday, I probably won't be able to use him. Hope you're still doing well and happy with your ps!
