Dx's Fruit Pick of the Week!
(A new weekly post, devoted to Fruit!)
This week's Pick?
The Unassuming yet Sensual (if not downright Sexy) Strawberry!
Why the Strawberry?
Well, this week, I'm up to my elbow's in them.
Not picking my own, but bought WAY TOO MANY!
My local Kroger Grocery apparently "Got Such-a-Deal!"
Either That, Or-
The "Pricing Gun Boy" was on crack when he priced them.
A Huge, Mountainous Tower of 1 pound baskets priced at-
3 for $2 !!!!
Yes, Sixty-Six Cents a Pound!!
And these were No inferior Fruits!
Shipped up from Florida (I love you Floridian Strawberry Growers)
Luscious, Big, Redder Than the Cheapest of Lipsticks!
Each one a Splash of Sweet Sumptuous Strawberriness!
Needless to say, there was a swarm of shoppers that made
An 85% Off Everything Sale at Macy's Look Tame!
As of now, I've eaten right at 2 pounds.
I bought a dozen, and stopped there, only because
I was afraid of being mauled by a feisty horde of Blue-Haired Ladies
Who were all but Ramming folks with thier carts
To get closer to the Foothills of the Strawberry Mountain!
Everyone in my house is feasting on Strawberries!
Strawberry Smoothies are flowing like water for my son's teenaged friends!
Strawberry Salads, Strawberry Jell'O/Cream Cheese Something with Walnuts!
Fresh Strawberry SF (no added) Tart!
So,
Why This weeks Pick?
I'm presently Intoxicated by The Strawberry!!!
Now, Some Strawberry info-
Strawberries are not really berries or fruit in the "botanical" sense
But are actually an "aggregate fruit" -
The "real" fruit are the objects we think of as the "strawberry seed" -
Properly called "achenes" -
Which are fruits in the same way that a raw sunflower seeds are fruits.
The "berry" is actually an "enlarged receptacle" and is not reproductive material.
As a result, strawberries must be picked at full ripeness,
As they cannot not ripen once picked.
Ounce for ounce,
Strawberries have more Vitamin C than citrus fruit.
According to the American Cancer Society,
Foods rich in Vitamin C
May lower the risk of cancers of the gastrointestinal tract.
Strawberries have No Saturated Fat, Cholesterol and Sodium.
They are also a good source of Folate and Potassium,
And a very good source of Dietary Fiber, Vitamin C and Manganese.

And now for --- This Weeks Odd Fruit Fact-
___________________________________________________________________
Believe it or not, the Nebraska Supreme Court decided an opinion
Dealing specifically with the methods of sale for strawberries to the public
The Uniform Weights and Measures Act adopted by many states
Says that one can sell small berries, in this case strawberries, "by weight or by volume"
And the state inspectors decided that a store cannot sell them both by weight and by volume
In the same store at the same time, although they could sell by weight one day
And the next day by the pint, half-pint, etc.
The state commissioned a survey and over 80% wanted them sold both ways,
But the State Inspectors won out!
the Nebraska Supreme Court prohibited such a sale method
Because it would confuse patrons as to which was the better deal.
As a result, most of us one must by an entire half pint
Even if that risks having moldy ones at the bottom,
In order to have a few strawberries for a mid-day snack!
Or, at some places/times, they can be purchased only by the pound.
It is up to the individual store to decide the only way to sell 'em that day.
They are prohibited from entering any other sale method
Than one of these two, and then only one at a single time.
- Baker's vs. Dept. of Agriculture, [as of Jan. 4, 1996--JAMM]
Recently in Portland OR, I bought Strawberries by the pound.
Whole Foods (great place if you have one near by)
Was selling Strawberries imported from Hawaii,
And they were each the size of a healthy baby's head!
It was like buying Apples!
So, Enjoy some or, A Big delicious Strawberry this week!
May your local pricing gun boy, be high as a kite, and
Have just as much success in getting the right label on as mine!
Better Health!
Best Wishes-
Dx

I know it had to be a mistake.
Either the store ordered WAY TOO Many and
They were afraid of losing the whole lot of them-
(but they were fresher than fresh)
Or some one totally "pooched" the signage and it was too late
To change in the throng of rabid shoppers.
usually $2.sumthin a carton for the same item here.
I should feel guilty,
Sort of like filling up with gas when the pump
is running but the numbers aren't spinning...
But, that mob mentallity rules!
Too small of a scrupels ethical issue
To think about for more than a second.
I'm sure they'll make up any of the stores losses by
Adding it on to the other items
marked- "Every Day Low Price!"
Best Wishes-
Dx
Ok, send them up to Chicago and Karyn and I will share
I went to three stores looking for good fruit, the grapes from South American were awful, yes I taste them first. The peaches and nectarines were mushy, the strawberries were the kind that are all white inside....
Ended up with banana's and oranges I will be waiting
Take care,
Kathy

Yummm! Strawberries are my favorite!
I'm from Tampa. My mom and I used to attend the Strawberry Festival in Plant City every year. They had huge vats of strawberries and all the fixins for assemble yourself strawberry shortcake. That was the perfect introduction to such a lucious fruit. I remember riding the double ferris wheel with my mom at that fair when I was about fifteen. It was magical and terrifying, but mostly I remember sitting at the top with my mom.
I am surprised to say that the best strawberries I have ever had are grown right here in Oregon. They are only available for 2-3 short weeks in early summer. When you see the first batch at your local grocery store you get excited. (Safeway and the other big chains don't carry them because they have contracts with the growing giants like Dole.) Of course I don't know the name of this variety, but they are really small, very lumpy and homely, and are pretty fragile....but for locals it is a true love affair!
