Achievone Drinks okay right after....

Hey Grads, I figured I'd ask well established WLSers about these Protein drinks. My surgery is January 23rd and I have heard about these Achievone Protein drinks. My question is can I have them right after surgery? I am pretty sure they have caffeine in them because they have coffee in them. Isn't that a NO-NO or do you think there really is not much in them that will do any harm? Also, any favorites out of the flavors? Thanks!!! Shannon

What does your doc's post-op protocol say? Nowhere Man/PH/Jay

I actually go for the pre-op class on January 12th. I really don't know what his protocol is. I've just read on the boards about caffeine after WLS.

Shannon-The reason why Jay asks is because for every doc there seems to be a different set of rules. For instance--caffeine is not a problem with my doc's program. Just be warned that after surgery everything will taste pretty crappy for a while. My family enjoys the mocha and the cappucino--we don't really care for the vanilla nut. People rave about hazlenut--but I have never tried it as they have been out of it for a while.

Lynda, Hazlenut is my least favorite of the four, with Vanilla Nut running a close second. Like your family, cappucino and mocha are my personal favorites. Funny thing, before surgery I NEVER did coffee in any form. Just thought I would share Have a wondeful New Years Eve! Tammy

Shannon, Just like Jay and Lynda said, each doc can have different protocols. My doc did not allow caffeine in any form in any substantial amount because he said it can irritate the stomach/pouch. I have heard others claim that it can cause ulcers in healing pouches. However, I can not say for sure as I have not done much reseach on it. I was extremely protective of my pouch as it was healing but now at 2 years out, I do coffee once in a while. Don't know if it will come back and bite me later. Something I will share, I am very careful not to take vitamins and etc near anytime I drink coffee or tea (or diet cola if I drank it). Oh, and I agree with Lynda ... don't be surprised if stuff, even stuff you used to love, tastes absolutely funky for a while! Best wishes with your surgery and journey! Tammy

I could have the AchievOne right after surgery, but the caffeine DOES make my heart race a little, even now, so be careful and FOLLOW what your doctor tells you!! I like Cappuccino the least and LOVE the Mocha Java the best with Vanilla Nut second and then Hazelnut. They are coming out with a chocolate and vanilla in 2006, but I like the coffee bases of the 4 they have. I would suggest that you check with your doctor and do not stock up on a lot of any one kind of protein since your tastes are likely to change after surgery. Before surgery the Nectar Roadside Lemonade was good, but that didn't last too long after surgery. I grew a repulsion for it and never did finish the big container of that stuff! Yuk! Jan
