Oxilate levels, post surgery

Has anyone had a problem with kidney stones? I went to a bone doctor and she said I have a high level of oxilates in my urine that can lead to stones. It seems I have read this before on the main board. It comes with an alteration to the intestinal system or is hereditary. Mine, I think, is because of the surgery. The doctor seemed to think so also. Therefore, my question: Has anyone had a urine test that indicated a high level of oxilates? particularly because of this "altered state" surgery. I would appreciate a reply. There are foods, including tea and geletin which are on the list. Thanks. Marilyn

I have had surgery for oxilate kidney stones and lithotrypsy (blasting the stones to bits with sound waves) 10 years after my first surgery. Protein was restricted at the time. What list are you referring to? tee

Hi tee, I got a partial list from my doctor, breaking down each food group from the highest to the lowest grams per serving. I also looked up oxilates on Web MD or Intelihealth.com (Harvard's Web Site). Good luck. Marilyn

I had high oxilates waaaay before surgery too. The list I got from the dietician of foods to avoid included tea, chocolate, nuts, strawberries, cranberries, spinich, rhubarb, and wheat germ as the worst offenders.

Thanks Willow for your reply. This is all new to me and the only thing that I really can't restrict (or don't want to) is tea (decaf). The rest I can let go of, although Chocolate is interesting!!! Since none of this is on the surgery diet, what am I concerned about, right!! Thanks again, Marilyn

I would say that pretty much everything on the list is something I can and/ or have eaten as a post op. 3 years out and I eat most things except greasy fried stuff, and I avoid sugar and starchy junky stuff most of the time. . chocolate is not a good choice, but I sometimes indulge. I make rhubarb pie with splenda about once a year and the rest seem to be good foods other than the kidney stone effect. I am a spinich addict. My urologist told me ( and this was my dr, telling me not yours telling you) drinking water is actually the most important dietary change for preventing stone formation, it dilutes your urine and the concentration of the oxilates etc that form stones. . Getting in enough fluid , drinking til your urine is clear and very pale is the most important thing to preventing stones. He said at least 8 - 8 oz glasses of water a day, which is what is recommended for everyone, with or with out stones, preop, post o***** op.
