I have a co-worker that went to the doctor yesterday because she was sick which she caught from her husband. Well....she comes in today to tell us that she has now exposed us to a very contagious influenza that she has and that her doctor has her on a drug called "Tamiflu" which is what they also use to treat the bird flu with, and that we now have to go to our doctor to be put on the same drug as a preventive since we have been exposed. I have a appointment tomorrow and will ask the doctor about me being able to take it or not cause of the NSAIDS thing but has anyone had any experience with something like this?

Kim, No experience But Tamiflu has been on the News like crazy over the last month. Not NSAid related at all. Typically made from an extract of Star Anise. It will actually be hard to come by. An Anti-Viral drug That people have been "hoarding" of late. Gogle it. Should come up with 1000's of hits! Best Wishes- Dx

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tamiflu lots and lots of information - if you are up for the read. How many got exposed? That sounds really scary. I work in a building with 1500 people & I never would have thought something like that could be possible. DId she say how the husband was exposed?

Thank God I work in a office of only 4, but that also means we are so on top of each other it makes almost impossible to not catch it.

I just called my surgeon and they said it's find to take if I need to be on it. That's a little relief.

I don't know, I think there's going to be a lot of "scares" out there ... just on the news yesterday (I didn't hear the whole story) I heard mention that Tamiflu may not even help if anyone is exposed to bird flu ... so I think its going to be 99% hype (hopefully). Karyn

lol ... the "media" and "responsible" in the same sentence ... scary. They've been so anti-WLS I'm surprised there are still people having the surgery! And its not just Medical Information (don't get me started!! I will not go there ... breathe ... I will NOT go there ... breathe ... ) Karyn

Tamiflu is used for all types of flu, not just bird flu. It is flu season. All flu is very contagoius. This is a good reason to stay home and out of crowds, stores, movies etc. good handwashing is the best preventative to avoid pretty much any kind of illness. Bird flu has not been in the US in either humans or birds. The only way to get it is direct contact with infected birds and/ or thier feces. It does not spread from human to human or at least not so far. Only less than 200 people world wide have caught it. However influenza, or the FLU characterized by upper respiratory symptoms and fever, achines****s every year. and those who have weakened immune systems, and the elderly, or very young, or serious health problems are most suseptible. If you haven't had a flu vaccine this might be a good time to get one.
