OOOOHHHH! That poor baby! My DH has gout - started at 43. He is slender, works out and eats low fat. Gout has much to do with uric acid and body's failure to process properly. DH went on meds, which made him ill and steroids, that made the gout better and whipped the rest of him. I'm not a real homeopathic kind of person but I will tell you that he has had nothing but good luck with black cherry juice and black cherries. At first he ate and drank them, then he started taking black cherry pills six months ago (yep, black cherry extract - found them on line). Since then, he has had almost no problem. We met a guy in Vitamin World who was looing for black cherry pills and he, too, has gout and swears by them. I am hoping that this is an isolated incident for your daughter - the poor thing. This is just simply unfair and absolutely unacceptable (my mother tone of voice to the fates). I hope that she feels better soon. Oh, one more thing - make them give her something for the pain. Some docs are real jerks about it but my husband has had major abdominal surgery and said that it didn't hurt as much as the gout - course you don't have to walk on your stomach...Good luck to your daughter. I keep black cherry juice in the house for my DH too ... I'll have to look into the black cherry pills though! Karyn

hi JoAnn ... my DH does get bouts of it ... but his cousin's wife (who's under 30) does too ... I haven't heard of it too frequently in younger women, but she claimed her trigger was herring ... and then we noticed, whenever my husband ate a lot of shrimp, he'd get an attack. I don't know what, if anything specific really triggers it, but my husband has stayed away from shrimp and (thankfully) hasn't had another episode since (about 2 years now). Good luck to her! Karyn

Gout is a form of arthritis, and, as my PCP informed me when he dx'd me with arthritis at age 20, even little babies can get it. Gout is sort of 'specialized' arthritis, and very sensitive to diet. When my SO gets a flare-up, he does the black cherry juice, AND avoids certain forms of protein. (Sorry, I can't tell you which ones---he has to be his OWN food police, LOL!)
