Tek - you crack me up - I always love your posts - keep putting them out there!
Great start on the story. One concern is the amazing similarity to an episode to Jerry Springer I saw while I was recovering after surgery. I thought it was the drugs I was taking, but maybe it is all real, which moves from the genre of the "theatre of the absurd" to "creature feature."
Could you work the term "double-wide" in there somewhere? Its hard to believe that any such behavior could occur in a home w/o wheels under it.
You could also insert a few details about the time her husband tried to get her lose weight by hiding her false teeth.
Jerry ...Jerry ... Jerry

Ok - as long as it's venting day and I started this whole think I'll get my last one in and then I'll play nice from now on - I promise. Here's my biggest peeve:
You have women (mostly - yes there are some men who post but not many) who weighed 250 to 350 pounds or sometimes more. These people didn't think anything of eating 8,000 calories a day (I was in that group so I'm slamming myself as well), sitting around and not exercising or doing anything physical. They didn't worry about their health until they couldn't breathe while sleeping, their cholesterol went through the roof or their
blood pressure got so high it couldn't be measured. Then they have surgery. And you post that you take Advil. My god, these follow the rules to a T, my doctor said no NSAIDS, by the book post ops jump all over me.
They weren't so concerned with their health before - what's the big deal with one anti-inflammatory pill? And don't even mention soda! Ok - I'm done - night everyone. Thanks for letting me vent. Myrtle.
My friend, I have to disagree in part. Docs can only do so much, only say so much, etc. At some point, the patient has to pick it up and make it their own. Yes, there are meatball surgeons who give precious little attention to the long-term needs of their patients. They need to be identified by word-of-mouth and shunned by prospective patients (even if those surgeons happen to be are paying advertisers at OH). I see a greater problem. I see too many people who live their lives in such a un-thinking fashion. They never stop, consider, reflect, and then arrive at a course of action or behavior. They simply exist by reacting to the forces around them. Of course we all do that to some extent or another. But when this mode of reactive living reaches a tipping point, they have no control over anything and are subject to the whims of their environment. They assuage themselves by wrapping themselves in the mantle of victim-hood, but that rings hollow. The process of WLS must include changing they way they live our lives, and simply modifying the way they intake food. They must learn to respond rather than react, keeping control for their behavior within themselves and not ceding it over the world around them. People mouth those words, but until they integrate them into their thinking, they're toast. The clock is ticking on them and they will be back whining about needing a revision where no mechanical failure is present.
Fixing the docs will only get us so far. Fixing our guts will only get us far. Obesity is most manifest from the neck down, but much of the pathology exists from the neck up. The real challenge ( and the predictor of success) exists in a area just behind our eyeballs. Until that gets rearranged, what ever losses in weight you and I may realize are transitory.
The problem with the Main Board crowd is that they are most often convinced that WLS will solve the obesity problem 'ceteris parabis' (everything else remain the same or equal). Grads know this to be a lie. (Nod your head, say 'Amen', whatever here) For us to get back to normal is a death wish.
