There is one person to this day, even after I have lost 300 pounds, that I have not discussed my weight loss with. She would be opposed to surgery, and would not let it go, even after the success and health I enjoyed.
When my weight loss comes up, I say "I would rather not talk about this." It feels very confrontational, which is not comfortable. She pushes occassionally, and I respond the same more forcefully, which is REALLY uncomfortable, but there it is.
Saying "I did it with diet and exercise" would be feel a lot easier and would be far less uncomfortable. However, I the long term effect of the lie on my Psyche would be worse.
I wonder if some people that tell the half-truth are not simply avoiding some form of confrontation? The lesser of what they percieve to be two evils is lieing, rather than being confrontational?

Its a long, strange, relationship. She may have guessed, but she won't say anything until I do. Until then, its the white elephant in the living room

I did get one question that was off the wall. "Do you have AIDS?" Given that AIDS often results in severe wasting in its end stages, a couple of people who were not privy started wondering and put two and two together and got 5. The question was not presented to me directly, but to a close co-worker. He did not feel authorized to discuss the matter, but did pass it along. And from that point the whole question of one's sexuality comes into play, like it or not. Since I just love gossips, it was all I could do not to play along.
Did anyone else run into something like this, where your weight loss was not associated with WLS, but with some other catastrophic illness?

Wow, how did your BoyFriend feel about this
No one has said anything like this to me, probably because I am pretty open.

It could have just as easily been chemotherapy, or end-stage wasting associated with any number of diseases. Most people within earshot where in the know, but there were a few who missed the memo. Because we are attuned to people losing weight with rapidity, we see it and understand it as it occurs. There are still many who are not so aware. I'm with you. We need not disclose, but we should not deceive.

Hey TEK! Leave it to you to cut through the BS. My type of guy!
I have told anyone and everyone about my surgery. Some people don't get the fact that I did it to live longer. I took charge of my life and made a great decision to save it. I am an echo tech. I see people that are pre-op every day and I see that as my chance to still promote WLS as a healthy choice.
Taking charge of your life is extremely empowering and will change people's lives. Whether you use a popular diet and exercise regimen, or surgical options, you are still creating a future for yourself and nothing is more positive than that.
My views have never changed. My bod has been altered and will always be proud to be amongst these fine "WLS-ers".... but I see myself as more "normal" now than ever....just another gift from my surgery.
HUGS,
