All Ailments Related to WLS?

When I was MO I stopped going to the doctor for 10 YEARS because whatever ailed me, or even when just going for an annual checkup, my obesity was the source of everything. I had the option to change doctors since I live in a big city, but could not find one that didn't treat me like a second class citizen. This irked me and humiliated me to the point I stopped going to the doctor. During those 10 years I went twice: once when I broke my hand and once when I had a kidney stone. I was very lucky to be pretty healthy despite the obesity. Then one day I decided I had to take charge and I would allow no one to get in my way. This was MY life. I went through a couple of PCPs who were dead set against WLS before I found a compassionate one. Is a heart patient, a stroke patient, a cancer patient not every bit as high maintenance as the most needy a WLS patient? Would they be denied access? Of course not. There is a huge element of fat bias in our medical communities whether you are fat now or were formerly fat and chose WLS as an important medical management tool of your weight problem. It's sometimes hard to believe that intelligent, well-educated people can also be so stupid, naive and biased. This is really a hot button for me because I risked my life for 10 years due to the insensitivity of my local medical community. Not everyone is or can become strong enough to deal with this--I had to draw from some very deep reserves. But, Barbara, if you can find that reserve of strength, perhaps you should consider confronting your PCP in a scheduled meeting to discuss this issue. I know it won't be easy, but it might help you and he become a true partner in the management of your health needs. Good luck!!!! Ann
