I went to see my surgeon yesterday. He is doing my paniculectomy. I had blood work done a few weeks ago and my liver function came back off. he said I have a fatty liver which is common for losing weight quickly. It usually corrects itself after 13 months though. He put me on enzymes called viokase and told me to eat high protein low carb. I try to but I know I have been slowly eating more carbs which is probably why my weight has stalled for 8 weeks (I want to lose 10 more lbs) I really don't know how many carbs is considered low carb. He told me to drink 3 protein supplements a day (I usually have 1) I found a website that said low carb for a 1500 cal a day diet is 46% carbs, 22% protein and 30% fat. I eat about 1200 calories a day but that seems high for fat and carbs. I do not have a nutritionist so I am on my own. I was thinking of going to the book store to see if i can find something to tell me what to do. I am really worried about my liver. Any suggestions would be apprciated

Something like Atkins or South Beach books.....they are considered low carb.....South Beach is less strict and seems to be easier to follow with veggies and fruit too......I had a real fatty liver also, mine is all better now I too am sticking to low carb right now.....it is really how we should be eating for the long haul.....I got kinda ****y and was eating to many carbs and I am up 10lbs But I am not letting them stay....so I am low carbing it too!! You will do great if you stick to meats, fruits, and veggies.....that will probably be low carb enough! Take Care and good luck Jesi

Try to make at least 50% of your caloric intake (in your case, about 600 calories per day) protein and the rest should fall into place. ~~Sherry

I am having plastic surgery on Friday. They called today to say there were some slight problems with my liver. I told them I'd gotten a report from my PCP yesterday saying all my labs were normal. They called the PCP and called me back to say it was just a result of being a WLS patient. I will talk to my PCP the next time I see him about this because I'm confused. Low carb diets apparently don't do a lot of good because I've stayed below 20 grms of carbs 95% of the time for 24 months and have a problem. It seems to me that protein would increase the fat in the liver since it is mostly fat? Must not work that way though because my surgeon had me on a low carb diet pre-op to reduce the fat in the liver before surgery. No problems with my liver at that time, it is just routine for him to put people on low carb as pre-ops.
