anybody taking these orally? are they helping? The ortho report suggested that with malabsorption maybe I should get it IV?????? I have mild osteopenia in my hip and decreased density that is still within normal limit in my spine, want to act sooner rather than later, but with the best , most effective treatment. seeing a gastric bypass surgeon at Barix next week ( my dr abandoned me and moved to Arizona to start a new hospital for Barix, but the one covering for me now is a nice guy, I have met him once at support group) I'll bring in my dexascan results and labs to go over but was hoping to hear others experiences in the meantime.

Willow--I meet with my PCP tomorrow. So interested in hearing what she has to say about my results. Too bad this stuff doesn't come with a patch, I have heard it can be really hard on anybody's stomach.

I take Fosamax. Have for a couple years now. My last DXA scan showed some improvement. I am in the osteoporosis side of this, way past the osteopenia. Make sure you up your calcium. I take min 1500 mgs of elemental calcium citrate along with my vit d. Darlene

I have increased my citracal plus, but it is making me so constipated I feel like I should swallow it with a stick of dynamite!!

Take some magnesium to counteract the consitpation. Is the citracal plus calcium citrate? citrate is a must for us. Darlene

Willow--I met with my PCP today and we talked about my dexa results. I am pretty relieved because it is better than I expected. The big concern is that I am not even in menapause yet. My spine is actually excellent-it is in the + category--YAY! I have slight osteopenia in one hip and moderate in the other. She suggessted I start taking the new drug--forget the name, the one you take once per month. I am gonna email my surgeon and nutritionist to make sure there is not anything else we need to take into consideration. It's nice to be able to compare notes with people.

is it Boniva? I had heard about it, talked to a nurse at the gastric bypass surgeons office & she said there was not much info availble about it for us. I'll see the surgeon next thursday and share what ever I learn. it is a bisphosphonate like actonyl and fosamax. i like the idea of once a month, less likely to hurt my pouch??? My pcp office told me to talk to the wls dr first and let them know his recommendation. the ortho recommended taking calcium citrate and vit D. big surprise, like Im not already??? and to see a dietician and my surgeon in regard to the suitability of the drugs to my pouch and malaborption issues. said I might need IV, but the nurse at my wls dr office said they have people on fosamax and just have them take pepcid with it to protect the pouch. let you know more after next thursday/
