Morning from the "Cap'n"...
Hey all.
Long time, no post...huh??
I am doing pretty well, but still in pain from the hernia repair of this past summer. We are moved in to our new house and I have been EXTREMELY busy. Lots of outside stuff to do and it is refreshing to be able to do it with less effort. I still get the "good sweat" but like I said it is a good sweat. Not sweating from getting out of a chair.
Anywho...here is my question. I had open hernia repair done this summer and my surgeon went through the same incision my open RNY was done with. It is a 10 in*****ision. It healed up pretty well but has been sore since healing. I have heard that many of you that had this same repair have dealt with pain from it for quite some time. About a week ago I noticed a bulge about the size of a half dollar in the middle of the incision. It now is getting red and puffy. It is tender to the touch and I think I might have some kind of infection going on, DEEP under the skin. I know, I know...I need to call my surgeon but I have an appt. with my internist this coming Wed. to discuss this with her since my surgeon is 2.5 hours away. I have an appt. with him next Thursday that was already scheduled. I am going to ask her what she thinks it might be and if maybe I popped a "tacking" where the mesh was put on. When I finish this posting, I am going to call my surgeon anyways and just let them know it is going on. I sure hope it isn't something that needs to have surgery to repair. The recovery from this hernia has been very long and more painful than the recovery from my RNY.
You all take it easy and thank you all for any responses. I'll be back on a little later. I got some things to do and then I am taking it easy for the rest of the day.
Love ya all...Cap'n K-Man
Yo Ken"
First the caveats: I am not a doctor, did not play one on TV nor did I sleep in a Holiday Inn Express.
Having said that .....
Sounds like it could be a seroma, a pooling or collection of fluids that developes in a void along an incision line. If it is a seroma, the main issue is the potential for infection. They can be treated with antibiotics easily enough. They can be uncomfortable for a while until they absorb over time. If it is a seroma, your PCP will be in a position to act.
Now if it is a gap in the mesh, that is another matter all together and most likely will fall on the plate of the surgeon.

Thanks for the response, Jay. It looks like it could be a seroma to me. I had a couple of those after my RNY and they had to be drained and then heal up from the inside out. If it is a mesh issue...well, let's just say I hope it isn't a mesh issue. I really can't afford to be off work any more this year. I'll let ya all know after Wed. what my pcp says.
Have a super night and maybe I'll see ya round the boards...Cap'n K-Man
Hiya K-Man!
It's always good to see you. I know you have been very busy w/the move and getting settled in. What timing to have had a hernia repair and move not far between each other. That's a lot of physical stress.
I hope whatever the problem is that it isn't major. I know it isn't easy to just take it easy, but try and take things a bit slower.
Let us know what your doc says. Sending you well wishes for a speedy recovery.
Jeannie
Hi Jeannie
I know I haven't been on much since the move and even before that too. Before there was just so much to do to get ready and then, once we got here...It's so peaceful and quiet out here. It's like being on vacation every day except for all the darn work I have been doing. I took it easy today though and will do the same tomorrow too. I am rearranging my garage now though so I can finally get my truck in there. It hasn't seen the inside of a garage since the move so I think it's about time. That being said...I will not be doing any heavy lifting.
Thanks for the response and have a super night...Cap'n K-Man
Hi K-man-Great to see you! What did your surgeon say when you called? I definitely wouldn't wait too long before following up on this. Infection is definitely not something you want to mess with.
My ps is 2.5 hours away too and I am going there twice a week to get my seroma drained. Hope it turns out to be nothing serious.
Hi Lynda!!
Unfortunately, I didn't get the call out to him like I needed to. While on the computer, I started a dumping episode and it made me very, very sleepy. I ended up taking a nap and slept away the whole afternoon. I am planning on making the call first thing in the morning and then taking it easy the rest of the day.
Good to see ya today and I hope you all survived without the Cap'n to push around!!
Be good and have a good night...Cap'n K-Man
