Let me start by saying that I am not a WLS Grad but I was scanning the various messageboards and came across this one. I'd like to assure you all that not all newbies or pre-ops agree with this young lady. I am scheduled for surgery on Thursday, Oct. 20th. I came to this site to learn and gain knowledge about how to make this surgery work for me. I AM TIRED OF BEING OBESE AND I WANT TO FEEL BETTER AND BE HEALTHY. I intend to use this tool to my advantage and lose every pound I can. I also have a sweet tooth and know that sweets are my red flag. I intend to stay completely away from them, not even allowing myself a "funsize" candy bar. I KNOW one will lead to two and two will lead to three and pretty soon, I'll be justifying eating a whole bag. I am not going there. Please be patient and understand that some of us newbies and pre-ops are here to learn and succeed. I thought all you guys were being too hard on this gal until I read the entire thread and I quickly changed my mind after reading it. People will do what they do and there's no way to teach them otherwise. BUT, I did learn from it and hope not to make the same mistake. I really want to succeed at this. It's my last chance. I hope and pray through my hard work and the surgeon's experienced hand that I can someday reach my goal and have a healthier, happier life. I hope all you wish that for me too. Pray for me to have a successful, uncomplicated surgery and recovery. Bless you all, Fran

I don't know why I went over there to read the thread---I knew it would irritate me, and it did! Those folks obviously only want people to agree with their rationalizations. My way to deal with Halloween is to go out to a movie and not buy any candy. I do occasionally eat sugar-free candy, but I'm also in maintenance. I do hope she is able to control herself, for me that stuff is evil! Hugs, Connie

I can understand your frustration.... It's like there is a group of people in the universe just waiting for us to fail...especially the insurance companies!!! When you see people so easily brag about their tempting fate.. it's disappointing... ok, now I sound like my mother.... But seriously, it is scary when you hear some of these folks brag about what they can eat... are they proud to disregard their life saving surgery? I'm going for a long run this weekend and think about this one.... it oughta provide motivation to get to mile 4...... Congrats at being at goal.... I'll get there one day!! Laurie - minus 166 lbs!!

OHHH - our way is to get those mini-bags of pop corn - that way I can have some occasionally too and everyone else likes that - so if it's in the house THAT one isn't so bad! But the candy - NO WAY!

oooh This is a tough room. C'mon. Where's all the "cutsey, wootsie, poostie, sure eat whatever you want" sort of crowd when you need them. Honestly, some people are going to fail at this and there is precious little your can do to wrestle the candy bar away from them. Let them fail in peace. Nowhere Man/PH/Jay

There is a saying in my family: The fool makes the same mistake again and again. The wise man learns from his. But a real genius learns from the mistakes of others. If the boards have any single benefit potential, it must be the possibility of gleaning wisdom without the accompanying scars. Nowhere Man/PH/Jay

Did you see the one about "Whether or not she should tell her surgeon that she has been smoking"? Don't flame me... I know all about cigs.... I used to smoke a couple right after eating a bag of Snickers..... But to try to sneak this by? People are way too casual about this surgery.... Are the shrinks doing their jobs? Aren't you supposed to understand that wls is your last chance? Oh well... somebody tell them youngsters to straighten up and fly right!!! Laurie - minus 166 lbs (and smoke free)
