Eileen-I am being so very good--but I really am going stir crazy. In fact I have a follow-up tomorrow, which I tried to change, but couldn't. I am going to ask him what can be done to get back to life as usual--all my golfing buddies are back and I can't go out and play! I am so interested in what the doc has to say about this dexa-scan. Interesting that all those docs recommended against the drugs. Charlie C was taking one for a while and she had problems with it. I am just so pissed at myself for not getting this dexa-scan earlier. I just have this gut feeling I may have had the problem before. Oh--Eileen the reason why I wanted to change the appointment--I had a golf committee meeting

OK, this is my second response but I can't take it anymore, quit beating yourself up! Y'know, it's not even clear how much any type of calcium supplementation helps anyone, particularly in middle-age, never mind the gastric bypass thing. We can only try. We do what we can, and maybe we can do even more, but by golly, bottom line, I don't think you'll ever know how much of your bone density issue -- IF you have one, and who knows how much of one -- has a thing to do with your vitamin intake habits. For all you know, even MORE supplements might've been as effective as a rain bonnet in a hurricane. See what they have to offer that's better than that now. If you MUST beat yourself up, at least make it a weight-bearing exercise. Smooches, Suzy

I just got a script for a dexa scan. I had my base line done as a pre-op and they were good then, but that was 4 years ago. I'll let you know when I get the results! Linda

Hi Lynda. Since this is your first dexascan, maybe the doctor wants to discuss "preventative measures" for osteopenia. Try and not worry until you talk to him (I know this is easier said, than done). A woman in my building told me she was just diagnosed with osteopenia. This woman looks so vibrant and fit and I'm assuming she's in her mid 50's. She DIDN'T have WLS. So, it can happen to any of us. What other health issues are you dealing with? I hope you feel better soon. Cathy

Thanks Cathy--I am hoping for the best. You are right it can happen to anyone and like I said before--I just have a feeling I had this issue before wls. My other health problems have nothing to do with wls and I should find out at least a little more tomorrow. thanks again for the good thoughts.

Hello Lynda I had my 1st dexa scan about 18 months post op and was diagnosed with osteopenia in my right hip. I have hypothyroidism and take levoxyl -strike 1, had a hysterectomy 3 years ago -strike 2 and RNY -strike 3. I never had a dexa scan pre-op but believe that the osteopnia was there prior to my RNY as I had horrible pain in my right hip when I was MO. I take my citrical every day without fail as well as eating several servings of dairy. My family practice doc suggested Fosomax, but my insurance would not cover it and I have heard it is hard on the pouch so for now I just hope that it does not get worse. Hang in there till you talk to the doc, it could be a very minor thing. Kimberly

Thanks Kimberly. It probably is a minor thing. It is amazing how many wls people are dealing with this. I never knew you could have it in different areas. Thanks again for your support

Year and a half post-op here. Dexa shows GREAT density. Take 4 Viactive chews (yep, the "wrong" kind of calcium) broken up in 2 sittings. Dunno - I also exercise extensively. ~Lara
