Am I just sensitive ..
Well .. 17 months out .. 180 pounds gone .. and really happy and so glad I had the surgery .. but the one thing that boggles my mind .. and maybe some of you can relate .. is that I DUMP on everything .. I was diabetic before surgery .. really bad.. and now .. I find that anything with remote traces of sugar .. I dump .. I am starting to wonder if it has something to do with the diabetes ???
I read every label .. watch my sugar .. I do not eat bread.. pasta or any white carbs.. but when it comes to natural sugars like those found in yogurt .. some fruits .. protein bars where the sugars are really low .. I am in dumpsville forever .. it is starting to take a toll as during work when it hits .. I am so sleepy and warm all day ..
I see my NP next month and plan on asking .. but was just wondering if anyone esle has this .
Hugs ..

I was diabetic pre-op and according to my doctor once diabetic, always diabetic. My blood sugars have been in the high normal range without medication since surgery. They still stay in the high 90's or low 100's most days.
I don't dump on anything that I know of right now. I really didn't experiment until I reached maintenance but I've eaten a piece of fudge, half a biscuit, slice of cheesecake, 3/4 cup rice, noodles, etc with no ill effects. That leads me to think I will never dump.
I have eaten a soft cone twice that sent me to the bathroom quickly but I think it's lactose rather than sugar. I never felt weak or needed to go to bed after eting the ice cream.
I prayed that I'd be a dumper when I had surgery. I figured that would keep me on track. Today looking back I'm thankful I don't dump. I make good choices these days, but I'm glad I can occasionally chose to eat something just for the taste.
Best of luck to you.
I am diabetic and seldom dump. The only thing that causes me to dump is something both sugared and liquid or quickly liquid. For example, if I eat more than few bites of ice cream, I dump. Dump for me means hyperglycemia followed by hypo (I fall asleep, although it seems almost like passing out).
My hypothesis (without any evidence) is that the length of bypass could be related to propensity do dumping syndrome. But I can't find even anecdotal evidence that effect.

I made the statement to my surgeon before my surgery to make sure I was a dumper after surgery. He told me nobody knows why some do and some don't dump, but that only about 40% of his patients dump. He does the same RNY procedure on all patients, but he does bypasses more on extremely large patients like me. Bypassing more didn't make me dump.
Now that I'm at goal I'm happy I don't dump. I find I don't need that deterant to be in control of food. I don't eat many carbs even now, but it's nice to know I won't be sick if I chose to eat them on rare occasions.
Have a great day!
it is weird. I sometomes dump really bad and other times not at all. and I might dump on something I have had many times before with out a problem. I think one of the keys is eating protein first. If I eat a piece of chicken ot steak etc, I can have a cookie or other treat, but only in the evening. If I eat something like that in the am I am dead. I get the sleepies, sometimes I will get rebound hypoglycemia ( and never eat sugar for that or you will rollercoaster ride your blood sugars - protien only!) some times I'll do the full blown dumping I can feel all the fluids rushing to my guts and I bloat up like I am pregnant and my gut hurts really bad, then the diarrhea hits. The thing is that it is unpredictable. I have eaten pineapple pretty much every week then whammo! dump.
Natalie,
Here is something else to consider ... could you be lactose intolerant? Many people develop an intolerance to dairy products after surgery and that could include yogurt and whey in protein drinks.
If the protein bars (or any other item that is low sugar) you could have dumping symptoms because of the sugar alcohols in them. I am so sensitive to them even 1 gram does me in. So things like Sorbital, Manitol, Malitol are just a few ... I avoid all sugar alcohols completely. They really make me sick and are not worth it.
It might be worthwhile to start keeping a food diary and reactions to see if there are any trends for you.
Hope you find some answers soon.

Have you been checked for hypoglycemia or rebound hypoglycemia? A woman just posted on another board I'm on that she had the same symptoms - passed the warm flashes off as change of life and cound out she's hypoglycemic and didn't know - see what the doc says - call before your appointment - they may want tests completed before you see them.
