Blood Sugar??

Happy Saturday to everybody...Hope you're enjoying the weekend! I had an "issue" this morning, and I wanted to see if it had happened to anyone else. I ate breakfast this morning (Special K), and was fine. Then as I was getting dressed about 4 hrs later, I noticed that I was feeling a little strange - my hands were shaky, and I felt almost disoriented. I felt hot, but then cold, too...at the same time! I also felt very emotional, like I just wanted to cry, and nervous. I talked to my sister, and she said that something like that had happened to her, and her dr. said she thought it might be low blood sugar. Now, pre-op I never had any experiences like this, but this is the 3rd time it's happened (over the course of several months) and this was the worst time. Has anybody else had this experience?? I would really appreciate any feedback!

Many post ops get it and it's been referred to as Rebound Hypoglycemia. The carbs in the cereal may have made your blood sugar plummet, it's better to eat protein first and also with carbs to keep the blood sugar from dropping too much. Talk to your doctor about it, they can do a test for it - it's not the same test as for HypoGlycemia. Check on what you eat before it happens. Try to get in some protein as soon as you find it coming on and keep glucose tablets handy until you get a handle on this. Its becoming very common with post ops- may be some info on it under Library or in past posts.

Hi Lorena, I have been going thru the same thing. I know it's not dumping. I get sweaty, tremors. My doctor calls it "Reactive Hpyoglycemia". Common in WLS patients. In fact, I have to be at the hospital at 6:45 a.m. in the morning for a three hour Glucose Tolerance test. The most likely treatment will be a visit to the dietician. he also said I would be eating six meals a day instead of three but that won't work for me because I have to eat every couple of hours anyway so I don't know. Right now when that happens to me, I grab something to put in my mouth. The doc said that only sets us up for another episode.

SO it's NOT dumping??? I am having that too!!!!! My doc just said you are having low blood sugar, eat something and relax. :-/ I haven't been tested extensively. This is interesting to hear about....I like to think it's not a dump, since sometimes I haven't eaten anything bad. Tracy

Well, I know MINE is not dumping. I have only dumped on sugar once and that was from homemade ice cream at DollyWood summer before last. I do dump sometimes on fats, olive oil and the like. i have only been having this issue for about six weeks and it is several times a day. I can't and won't speak for everyone but I already know for sure that mine is not dumping. not even close. no, i don't think eating every two hours is normal for most post ops. I have been eating to gain.

That's a dump and cereal does it to me. Now....essentially dumping is a rise and lowering of blood sugar. You know what I have found to help me through a dump? Either I sleep or a eat fruit or something with a little sugar in it...and I actually feel better. NOW, the lower intestinal dumping I get....can't do anything about it, but GET IT OUT of you! Keep your chin up...and watch the milk/cereal. Tracy

It's not dumping, it's too much carbs and not enough protein. I've done it when I've only had carbs for breakfast, like right now I am starting to get a little shakey cuz' all I've had so far is some sugar free mocha capp. and a small doughnut hole (I know I am bad) going to have a nice slice of high protein quiche then I'll feel better. At times all I can stomach is my oatmeal, but I know that I have to have something protein later or my body freaks out. Sometimes it's so bad I have to lay down and sleep, the shakes and the sweats are bad. And these episodes are NOT dumping, just my blood sugar. I know what it is because I had problems like this before surgery, just when I didn't eat. So just make sure you have more protein than the Special K (is this the high protein one?) and your milk, maybe throw in a few bites of cheese, or a slice of deli meat? Something to get the balance back up. Good luck! Michawn

Hey Larena, Just a quick note with something else to think about. It may sound like dumping, however, 4 hours after eating, it doesn't sound like it to me. I get this way if I've waited too long to eat, OR, the most likely culprit is if I've waited too long to DRINK.. How was your fluids during this 4 hours after breakfast? I've almost passed out before from these hypo-glycemic type episodes, and even plain water brings me back to life... Although usually the urge is so URGENT that I hit whatever my hands grab first, which is usually cheese or CARBS in the form of p-butter pretzels. Don't wait too long between meals or fluids.. try to keep things going. Maybe you need more frequent feedings? Wendy
