Lab Results

Well, I've had my first official comprehensive labwork done since surgery. I have moved since my surgery, the closest bariatric doc is 4 hours away, and my general doctors have no idea what to run when I ask for bloodwork except now I am armed with a whole barrage of tests (thank you Darlene for posting them!). So anyways, the results: Iron and B-12 are at the low end of the normal range, Calium is good (love my new Citrate wafers), Chloresterol is great. BUT my liver enzymes are slightly elevated and my "good" chloresterol is slightly lower than what it should be. Any ideas what this is and if this relates in any way to WLS? Thanks all! Michelle

Michelle-Low iron and B12 are very common in post wls patients. Low B12 can/is a very serious problem. Sometimes the side effects are irreversible. Have you been supplementing with B12? What about iron? It is really important that you get yourself to a doctor who understands wls and can get you on the proper supplements ASAP. Liver enzymes are also another common problem, but I don't really know enough to advise you in that area. Please get yourself to a qualified doc ASAP.

I know at my one-year appointment, my WLS doc commented that my live enzymes were slightly off, and he said that could be an indication that my gall bladder would soon be acting up!? I hope not, and I'm not sure why that's related to the liver, but I know a lot of WLS patients have to have their gall bladder out. Hope that's not the case for you! Joni

When I had my labs done a few things were on the LOW side of average. In most people this is just fine and my PCP wasn't too worried. When my surgeons office saw it they put me on a weekly B12 sublingual and a monthly Vitamin D. I have not had blood work done since but I feel more energenic! I havent been to my PCP yet but will be sure to tell her. She has been wonderful about researching things about WLS she wasnt sure of, she has many wls patients she follows and is VERY thorough! I am glad Darlene posted the labs we need, she is a gem!!! Have a great weekend! Theresa
