I had my follow up appt with my surgeon this week and mentioned that i thought I am having low sugar epidsodes. he wanted my PCP, who is an internist and diabetic specialist to follow up with me. Well, my PCP has set me up for a three hour glucose tolerance test on Monday. Have any of you ever had this? I am a little concerned because of all the glucose they will be giving me. BUT, i do not dump from sugar and my surgeon thinks I will be alright. Just wondering if anyone else has had to have this and what did it do to you. He thinks I have Reactive Hypoglycemia brought on by the gastric bypass. Thanks

I wonder if the test is like what they give women when they are pregnant. :shrugs: If it is, then it is simple. You drink the icky stuff, then are tested a few times. Good luck! Theresa

i think it is the same thing and I know Sherry W. had one last week and was really sick for several hours. He said they would test my blood first thing (fasting0 then give me the stuff to drink then test me every half hour for three hours. I'm not sure if I have to drink the stuff every half hour or not but i could just see me puking my guts out. He asked me this morning if I could drink a regular coke. I think I have had one since surgery but usually drink diet coke and i don't remember if I had any problem with the regular or not. But I know i don't usually dump from sugar. Oh, I have but not much. It is usually the fat that does me in like soft serve ice cream or olive oil. Something like that.

If this is the one that you drink all the sugar water in a certain length of time, be very very careful, as it has had some bad reactions on some people....it's like drinking sugar syrup. Hypoglycemia is pretty common for us after WLS. Good Luck with it!! Darlene

Thanks, Darlene. I am scared to have it but have to. Both my adoptive parents were diabetics so I knew I was having hypoglycemia anyway but I am having several episodes a day. To the point that I am eating all day long trying to keep the episodes away. It is very frustrating to have to eat all the time. Plus, I have been eating to gain anyway and he still wants me to gain five more pounds. The doc said they used to have you drink something called,"Glucola" but couldn't remember the name of the stuff they use now. My PCp has several gastric bypass patients and is very familiar with our needs. he called it "Reactive Hypoglycemia" and he said I will probably need to eat six meals a day, mostly protein. I said, I eat all day long now and hardly anything but protein. So, i don't know what he will do with me. Oh well, maybe it won't be that.

Are you doing protein shakes? if so, what kind? I know a few of the ladies in my support group suffer with these episodes because of the whey isolates they drink, like Nectar. It hits the blood really fast..... Darlene

EWWWWWWWWWWW! I hate the nectar or other fruity drinks. I went thru a thousand before I found ELITE. I drink two a day with two percent milk.
