Effect of drinking with meals?
I don't see much in your profile to say how far out you are or if your even post op. Don't take me wrong or being harsh, but isn't this a question you should have asked BEFORE doing it? and, why would you go against your surgeons guidelines?
My surgeons guidelines give me the do's and don't's of his program. He says no chewing gum, no carbonation, no drinking during or 30 mins after. You know, in 5 years I've not once gone against his suggestions. I have had a sip or two of soda, but not a whole one, only when stranded with hubby and had to drink of his. Mine at home are flat sodas.
Your surgeon should have gone over all of this before surgery, your asking this now scares me...

Darlene,
No worries . I would NEVER take offense at someone trying to help me and I believe that is what you are doing.
I thought I had put in that I had RNY July 2004 ... must have missed something ... I'll go back and make it more accurate.
My surgeon did go over this with me ... I was just re-checking my info against everyone elses ... because your programs are different than mine. I didn't go against my surgeon's guidelines. I was having A LOT of difficulty eating after surgery and when I went for my 3 week (and again at 3 months) he encouraged me to do whatever I needed to do to eat at least three meals a day. We discussed drinking with meals and he indicated that I should do that if that was what it was going to take to get three meals in.
Having said that ... my surgeon is not nearly as strict as others ... I was told, literally, 'Everyone is different. You'll just have to try different foods and such until you find what is right for you and your body. Most people have the best results if they avoid a lot of sugar and fat'. I was told to eat 3 Flintstone's chewables and follow 'normal' RDA allowances ... nothing about all these protien supplements, low carb, iron supplements, b12 supplements .... AND, in his defense, I have done very well. I am at his goal weight within my 1 year, my blood work is excellent and I have had NO complications at all. While I admit his program could be improved by post-op support (which they have now implemented) and more strict eating guidelines, I knew it was lacking in those areas when I chose him. However, SAFETY and EFFECTIVENESS were most important to me .... and Dr. Farrell and his team are OUTSTANDING.
The other day, I had terrible stomach pain and so joined this group (and called my surgeon****il then, I didn't NEED support as I have been doing WONDERFULLY since surgery. However, I find this site VERY helpful and it has encouraged me to go the extra mile to try to go below 'doctors' goal weight. When my stomach hurt so bad, I started questioning if I had hurt my pouch and if so how. I knew I hadn't stretched it by eating too much and started worrying about the drinking while eating (and by the way, I actually drink up until eating then sip if necessary ... I CANNOT drink after eating at all). I don't feel my question was out of line OR that it indicated I didn't do enough research. On the contrary, I did A LOT of research. Somewhere in this thread I admitted I was confused in the difference between digestion and absorbtion (i.e. that oops I mis-spoke).
Another item that got me thinking about all of this is that my friend just had RNY and her whole program is VASTLY different than mine. I read her stuff and thought I could benefit from following some of her diet guidelines.
I'm happy to say that with the help of this site and her diet guidelines (and what I've found on this site), that I have lost 4 (yes FOUR) pounds in a single week! I have to slow down ;).
Deep breath ... with all that said .... thank you (and everyone) for all of the support and for taking the time to help and support me. I hope this doesn't come across harsh ... I really appreciate EVERYONE's feedback and I don't want to discourage anyone from saying EXACTLY what's on their mind when talking with me.
