Bariatric Vitamins -- which one?
Good evening, all!
I had my one year appointment today with my doctor. I had officially lost 126 pounds!
He wasn't too concerned about my borderline low zinc levels. (They were much lower last December). But he did say I need to start taking Bariatric Vitamins. He doesn't sell them, but suggested one of the following four brands:
-- Wellness Plus Capsules from Vista Vitamins
-- Building Multiple Vitamin from BBVitamins
-- The multivitamin capsule or tablets from Vita Lady (Although he says this is not specifically formulated for bariatric patients, but that many patients recommend it)
-- Multi-Formula multivitamin from Bariatric Advantage.
Does anyone take any of these brands. Which would you recommend?
There's also a big warning at the end of his vitamin sheet in ALL CAPS: IF YOU CHOOSE TO NOT USE BARIATRIC VITAMINS, YOU ARE DOING SO AT YOUR OWN RISK.
Man, alive.
He also told me to add Thiamine (Vitamin B1) and Biotin to my regimine of Iron, Calcium Citrate with Vitamin D, and sublingular B-12.
I also had slightly high liver enzymes which he said may indicate my gall bladder is going to act up. Oh great! I had several attacks 13 years ago, and I begged him to take it out during surgery but he said it looked healthy and insurance wouldn't pay for it.
He said I was doing fine, and told me to come back in a year. It was slightly anti-climatic.....

Congratulations Joni on your great success. All of those vitamins you listed are great vitamins. I took the Vista for a while, but decided to try a Solgar multi since they are the manufacturers of Vista. I chose the VM 75 formula which really resembles the Vista. It's just less money, less pills and more convenient. I tried the Bariatric Advantage calcium and really liked that--the cinnamon flavor was my favorite. I, personally use Twinlabs chewable calcium citrate wafers and love them.
I'm impressed that your doc didn't recommend that bariatric vitamin they sell at Walgreens--I think it is called Optisource. I think that is a waste of money based on the ingredients. I'm also impressed that he has you adding the thiamin as I understand they have presented evidence at the ASBS conference showing that has been a problem for many. I was happy that my Solgar has a good percentage of thiamin in them.
Anyway--it just comes down to which regime you prefer.
Take care and keep up the good work.
I take One Source Prenatal 3 days a week and One Source Women's Multi 4 days per week. They are lab grade and water soluble. I purchase them from Walmart.
In addition, I also take 1 folic acid pill daily and 2 Biotin (10,000mcgs) daily. For calcium citrate, I take 2 Citrical (639mg each). I get a monthly B-12 shot.
These have the same daily requirements as the bariatric multi and my lab work has come out perfect every time.
Another alternative that I use when traveling is Vitamist. It is a spray vitamin and its great.
