Iron problems/infussions- anyne else????
Hi Guys!!!! Thank you all for all you input... I have had to have 9 iron infussions ,about every 4 months I am completel depleted of all 3 forms of iron. Anyone else??? How are you dealing with this? Is this a forever type of thing? My Doctor won't say. Thanks again for your time in posting back to me. I am almost 3 years post-op if makes any difference. I also am showing problems with calcium, vit D, and a couple other, just not absorbing. I take B-12 1000g 1x a week...
God bless!!!!!
Sandi--It does not sound right. I know you need to up the calcium to a minimum of 1500 a day--take 500 each time. I know you need to up the iron as well. There are certain kinds of iron which work best for us. I am heading to bed now--I leave tomorrow at the crack of dawn--I'll be sure to look for your post when I return tomorrow night, to make sure somebody else has given you the gritty details. Hey guys--can you help Sandi out with some of your vast knowledge?
Hey Sandi,
I too suffered from extremely low iron. My saturation was down to 3% (normal 15-55%) and my total serum down to 20 (normal 35-155). I did the infusion series, and my sat rate only got up to a 5%, not nearly enough, especially considering the $$ out of pocket I had to pay for them. I tried many over the counter, and perscription iron supplements, with no help.. UNTIL a friend led me to a post of Tooters on this site. I now take the Solgars Gentle Iron, and its working for me. I also take chlorophyll 100mg once a day. My doc doesn't perscribe to this theory, but you know what.. its working for me. My last lab values were 27% saturation and overall serum of 101. I'll keep doing what works.
As far as calcium, are you taking citrate? I take citrate with D, 1500mg/daily, 500 at a time, spaced at least 2 hours apart from the last dose. I also do the b-12 shots monthly.
Hope this helps, best of luck to you.
Wendy
I've never had any problems with my blood work. I am now 19 months post-op. I did show up with my pre-albumin being too low early after surgery but that was resolved as I increased my protein and began to absorb better.
My surgeons requires a multi-vitamin and 1000 mg calcium ( I take 1260 mg) daily. I decided not to take any chances soon after surgery so I added a B-12 and a B-Complex daily which is fine with my surgeon. This routine has keep my blood work on the high normal side so far.
Some people don't absorb as well as others. People with the DS surgery seem to have more problems with mal-absorbing too according to my surgeon. Just repeating what I was told, not trying to get anything started on the board.
Hope you find the right solution for you soon.
