Confused About Fruits!?!

Hi All, I had my surgery in June 2003 and have done great. Fruit was the first thing I was able to tolerate well, so I escaped with it many times. Now I find I can't live without it, and eat it every day, sometimes several times a day. My question is this: I have been reading many posts, here and in other boards, that fruit needs to be avoided or eaten in much moderation. Can that be possible? I thought fruits, vegetables, fish, fowl, whole grain and non to low fat dairy were the "proper" balance of things? Am I missing something? I would like to lose another 10 pounds, but I stopped after losing 140 pounds (superb for me). Although I know protein is first, I have a hard time with meats, fish and fowl, of any kind, so I concentrate on legumes, cheese and my fruit. Any advice from the oldies? Thank you. missy the first 2 years of my surgery i ate only protien and tasted things didnt really eat them a bite here i bite there.. i love fruit and vegetables..i am at the weight i want and i seroiusly beleive that you need everything in your eating plan to balance off your self ..if that makes sence.. fruits do have sugar in it but its a natural sugar not proceeesed kind.. watermelon is like drinking water it comes out ..only its in a bulk form .. you get your vitamins from fruits a few extra vitamnins wont hurt you.. i eat 3 servings of fruit a day ..i eat a orange ..a peach sometimes grapes sometimes cherrys sometimes watermelon, cantelope, strrawberrys well thats my opion on fruit i eat it i love it ..if i dont have fruit during the day i feel like im missing out on something if that makes sence? have a great day joann

Many people avoid fruits (and I suppose even veggies) because of Carbs and Sugar. Ok, I understand avoiding them because of sugar and dumping, if you dump on it, but because of Carbs I just don't get Fruit is healthy, in moderation and variety. Veggies are healthy, in moderation and variety. Anything to an extreme can be unhealthy. I also eat a lot of fruit, at least when I can get my hands on it. I aim for a "balanced" diet using less processed foods as much as practicable. I do focus on protein first. I think people go overboard counting stuff like carbs, calories, fat, protein, and everything else. There is more to life and eating than numbers. I have a sense for what is healthy and what balance is in my diet, and I eat based on this sense. I refuse to live my life counting every little thing. Don't get between me and a bowl of ripe, sweet cherries. Carbs? Bah! Tek

Hi Tek! I can only speak for myself. I have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome with severe insulin resistance (weight loss did not improve the IR issue); and, I need to watch carbs like a hawk...even complex ones. If I went over 20 total carbs per day, my weight loss stopped in its tracks (even while being on Metformin...AKA Glucophage). I am now pregnant and need a more balanced diet for the baby; so, I have been adding more fruits and vegetables to my daily intake and my weight has gone up 22 pounds already...and, I'm JUST starting my third trimester today. Unfortunately, I have been battling severe nausea (taking Zofran and Reglan 3 X daily) and now have a probable ulcer. The ONLY things that want to stay down are carbs now...sheesh! I also justified having a piece of NSA apple pie with NSA ice cream last night, due to lack of calories for the day...but, MAN! did it taste good! Carbs (especially complex ones) are needed for a healthy body...as you well know. I'm just one that it doesn't work for...SO, have some carbs for me today, will you...I'm back on the wagon after dumping like crazy last night on *my* 'forbidden fruit'. ~~Sherry

I guess I didn't hedge my response enough. I appologize to those who have desease processes, alergies, intolerances, and other considerations either real or imagined, that require they track different aspects of their diet. More cherries for me! Tek

If it's been working for you, I wouldn't worry. Aka "if it's not broken why fix it?" Some people (like me) have a hard time with some fruits because of the sugar in it. But even with that being said, I still have some probably every day. *I* have to closely watch it because I was recently dxed with pre diabetes...but that's my experience. ~KD in WA

Hi Missy--I eat fruits, but I still have around 20 lbs I would like to lose so I am unsure you would want to take my advice. However--it sounds like it has been working for you so I would keep doing what you are doing. My one concern would be that I know that the meats, fish and foul fill me up and make me less hungry later on. If it is not that way for you then don't sweat it. Congrats on your success and the major lurking breakthrough!
