Lunchtime walk

I walked at lunch today - and went further than I have in the past - at least according to the pedometer which is different from the one I have been using. According to the pedometer, I walked 3.75 miles in about 45 minutes, which means a calorie expenditure of 370 calories. I have to admit that I was tired and hot and in pain when I got back to my car - but it was quite a sense of accomplishment. I'm sitting here now, sipping on some cool Crystal Light - don't want to drink too fast as I am still very hot. The weather here is miserable - wouldn't be able to walk at lunch if I couldn't walk inside - thank goodness all the buildings and two of the hospitals are connected. Will post more later. Patty

Thanks, Tooter. Unfortunately, it won't get anything but worse with repetition - the knee is bone on bone and that is the cause of the pain - so it won't get better til I get my knee replacement. My ortho doesn't want me exercising but I decided that if I'm going to be in pain anyway, I might as well burn up a few calories. Patty

oh geez! Does it effect you the same if you do water walking? I have one knee that is nearly bone on bone...not 100% thankfully, bu****er walking is pretty pain-free for me. Just getting to the pool is a nuisance. Sigh.....

Water walking is just as bad if not worse and getting in and out of the pool is a challenge as well. Not to mention that I only have access to the pool at my apartment complex and it is frequently full of little kids or teenagers or very young adults. That isn't a great atmosphere for exercise.

Sigh...sorry to hear that! I hope you find a way to exercise with less pain. Wish I had a suggestion, but I don't. I do a lot of band exercises due to my back and joint issues....but even those hurt.

My ortho doles out pain meds at a rate of 30 every two weeks. So I take a pain pill and walk. I figure if I'm going to hurt anyway, I maight as well make the best of it. Then I take another at night so I can stand to lie down. Sometimes the knee is so bad that I can't stand for the bedcovers to touch it, much less let it touch the mattress or my other knee. And on top of that, I had a stress fracture in my ankle on the opposite leg and arthritis has set in badly in it so it's painful all the time. I assume that I will someday have all titanium joints at the rate I'm going. The good news is that they don't hurt once you get past the recovery from the surgery. Patty

Hey there and congratulations on your long walk. I have been going to the gym since the end of May when school ended. I've worked up to 4 miles on the treadmill and 8 miles on the exercise bike. I just love it. Sometimes I do more. Plus, I've been doing weights as well. I really worked out hard today and I'm tired and ready for a nap, but I have coffee and karaoke with my local WLS FRIENDS tonight at the local coffee shop. A year ago, I started a monthly dinner and now we have coffee once a week and still have the monthly dinner. It's great and we all enjoy getting together just to share and enjoy each others company. elle

Elle, You are doing great with the exercise My knee won't tolerate the bike - I've tried recumbant bikes and it's no way jose. I would love to join a gym and work with a trainer but I don't have the funds and I fear that it would be wasted now - til I can get the joint replacement done. I even would like to try Curves but somehow can't find the money. At least, walking the hallways at work is free. Keep up the good work. P
