tingling in extremeties

I had my RNY surgery 15 years ago with great success and no problems . I lost 100#. Recently I've been noticing tingling, sometimes painful, always annoying, in my extremities. It's the worst when I am trying to go to sleep. I admit I've been terrible about taking vitamins and B12 (which I am now taking religiously). Has anyone else experienced this? I have an appt with my GP but I can't get  in for almost 2 months. Thank you!

Low B12 will bring on tingling.  Unfortunately, having low B12 over a long period of time can cause permanent nerve damage.  Once the damage is done, no amount of B12 will fix it.  At least taking your B12 now will ensure that it doesn't worsen.

Low Ferritin levels can cause pain, tingling and restless leg syndrome.

I would try to at least get a full panel of lab work done prior to your appointment. Maybe your PCP will order that for you so that when you do get to your appointment you will have something to go on.

I had my surgery about ten years ago. I quit taking my supplements, though I still use protein powder. I was feeling awful earlier this year. I had arm tingling, was exhausted all the time. I went to my PCP. During the visit I admitted that I had not taken supplements for a couple of years. A lot of my levels were low. The worst was my ferritin level. It was 4 (the acceptable range is 20-288. I was very anemic. I worked hard for the next two months to get my levels up. There are guidelines for postoperative supplements at https://asmbs.org/resources/integrated-health-nutritional-gu idelines

The information that I liked best from the posting are the notes under table 5. It says: "progress to whole tablet/capsule as tolerated". It also says to avoid time release or enteric coated vitamins/supplements. I have been fighting the chewables all along. I am going out to buy capsules this weekend.

Good luck,

Jayne

I had a stricture right after surgery and threw up for about a month before having it fixed (didn't know I had one till later).  I was several malnourished and my b vitamins were very low.  I had foot drop as a result, and permanent peripheral neuropathy.  My extremities also tingle. My right hand/arm is the worse.  Sometimes it feels like it is on fire, or being *****ed while at others it is so incredibly cold that I am freezing to death.  My feet also do it.  At other times, like this week, its my legs.  I haven't been able to sleep at night without putting on sweater tights and a thick winter pajama top because I am so cold and my legs ache so much.  I had to take a very hot bath last night and wrap my legs up in a thick furry blanket just to get to sleep.

You need to get your lab levels checked immediately and take the necessary supplements.  I have never stopped taking my supplements but nothing I have done has reversed the problem.  maybe if you get treatment in time, it won't be permanent.  This can lead to serious trouble.  I would NOT wait.

Your post is probably very helpful to those who have symptoms but no idea why. Not finding out what to take to keep yourself healthy is the worst problem we can cause ourselves in this journey.

I understand this isn't the cause of YOUR issues, but it is a great lesson for those who need to research these surgeries, and get their sh*t together. we need supplements over and above any usual course of vits and minerals, and way more protein intake. I think many of us may let the vits and minerals fall by the wayside, if they feel good and don't have teeth breaking, extremities tingling, or passing out!

Not trying to be a party pooper, but we had surgery to be healthier and live longer, better lives. Be sure we know what it takes!

Best wishes to the OP.

You might want to look up Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) and see if the symptoms match what you're feeling. I have it and when i first noticed it it was in the evening. I see a neurologist for medication.
