One year out and I have a question about food going forward
I am one year out and down 101 pounds. Luckily I have had no complications. My question to other grads is, is it possible to just go on a regular healthy eating program after you have hit goal weight? I see so much about no carbs, no fruit, etc. If I had been a healthy eater all along I would have been able to eat these and would have stayed at a good weight. Now, I am at the good weight and am just wondering if following the right balance of foods will work or do I really have to completely cut out all carbs and fruits, etc?
I am 8 1/2 years out, maintaining my 150+ weight loss. I eat complex carbs... so fruit, dairy, oatmeal, things like that. I personally choose not to eat simple carbs white stuff basically (flour, pasta, rice, chips, etc.) You can glance at what I eat (link in signature) I've blogged since day 1.
Congrats on your -101!!
I still eat lean proteins first and then vegetables. I eat complex carbs such as oatmeal, sweet potatoes, and fruit but not all of them every day. I like the satiety I feel with proteins and veggies. During the summer, I eat more fresh fruit due to the seasonality of those summer fruits.
If you are at the weight you want to stay at, experiment with the balance of protein, vegetables and complex carbs but no simple, processed carbs. I see no reason why you couldn't follow a healthy balanced combo.
Congrats on your 101 pounds at one year!

I am 5 1/2 years out and I do eat complex carbs - whole grains, fruit, and sweet potato is my ultimate treat! The trick is to limit the amounts and not round off cirners too much. I discovered the hard way that my old gabits were lying in wait for me - they are patient and will always be there if I am not vigilant. They will grab me and lull me into believing that a "minor" indulgence is ok...and the next and the next.
i am on a "lose the regain" regimen right now and have adopted a basic plan of good eating. Protein, veggies, one starch a day, one fruit a day, limited fats, and watch the hidden sugars. I still have a protein shake for breakfast every day.
I don't restrict anything and just stick to eating "healthy"... I aim for my lean proteins, fiber, veggies, fruits and whole grains.. but of course still white carbs/junky foods.. for me the key is moderation and not getting out of control.
