Hi  It's been some time   I had RNY  years ago and it's been a good thing   Now however come the vitamin deficiency issues,   In spite of supplementation I cannot seem to get the D2 levels up and am suffering the consequences big time!

Any Suggestions on better absorption methods?

Your doctor can prescribe vitamin D in a 50,000 iu pill taken once a week.  It is more easily absorbed than the over the counter stuff and is actually the correct formulation.  Best wishes. :)

that pill is also oil based and most ppl don't have enough intrinsic factor in. Their sleeves/ pouches to be able to absorb it ,so you are just peeing it down the toilet.

I purchased BioTech Pharmacal D3-50 (50,000 IU), 100 Capsules from amazon and I take it at least 3 times a week now.  I was not taking my vitamins as directed and my results were so low.  Here is the link - http://www.amazon.com/BioTech-Pharmacal-D3-50-000-Capsules/dp/B000A0F2B2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1407431838&sr=8-1&keywords=50+000+iu+vitamin+d3

I second the D3 50,000.  If you haven't already check out Vitalady.  As a long time WLS post op she has the best vitamins and supplements for our needs and she is always willing to help post ops figure out what they need.

Low vitamin D is a fact of life after RNY.

Get the prescription D capsules from your doctor.  You will need a prescription.  You will also need to test again in three months.  Before taking the capsules pierce them with a pin or needle.  Then take them with a warm liquid.

You will see good results in three months, but the D levels will go right back down unless you permanently stay on the dry vitamin D.

Work with your doctor on this.

The body needs to convert D2 to D3, which is inefficient when you can get D3 directly.  The doc might prescribe an oil based pill (D2) in high dose for you, which will be partially malabsorbed,  but a dry formulation absorbs much better, and it doesn't require a prescription at all.  You can buy them (50,000 iu) on Amazon or vitalady.com.  The brand name is Biotech.

I second the BioTech...it's D3 and it's dry so our RNY-modified bodies can better absorb and use it.  At my 1-year follow-up, the surgeon looked at my labs, looked at me and said, "I've NEVER said this to an RNY patient before...but your vitamin D levels are a little high!"  LOL - I wasn't toxic and I was at a good level, just a bit above normal; it was just nice to see that I was able to maintain a good level when so many people have a hard time with that one.  He did have me back off the number of times I take it but to stay on what I was using.    Good luck!
