OMG, I have been 2 years post op (RNY) Lost 200# and have broken my ribs  during sex FIVE times.  (I know what you're thinking and no it's not wild, and my hubby's only 170 lbs.) I believe it's caused by the pushing of my abdominal apron into my ribs. We have ruled out Osteoporosis.  The X-rays are not showing the fractures, and I have received nothing for pain.  I finally talked the Dr. into a  bone scan which revealed the current and past fractures. (HOORAY!) Is this enough proof to get help from insurance to have the extra skin removed? Is this a problem shared by anyone else?  Oh & if ur tempted to give positional advise, I have also had a recent knee replacement. ;) Thanks.

Thanks for the replies, and yes, it definitely ruins the mood......for about 8 weeks!  lol

how are your labs? It is possible that calcium is being leached out of your bones and making them weak and easy to break. Are you supplementing calcium?

Thanks for responding, my calcium level is fine.  Since  writing this letter, I broke another rib.....bending over to pick a sock up off the floor!  I'm sure it is the mechanics of suddenly shoving the excess skin/tissue into my ribs.  It's sudden and extremely painful.  Plastic surgery consult not helpful.  He says insurance will NOT pay for tummy tuck, regardless!!!  I'm sick knowing this is my destiny!

I wouldn't tell insurance about the sock, sounds less credible even tho I believe you, I don't count.  You need to convince THEM.  And I would find another plastic surgeon!

Thanks, but my gastric bypass Dr. is trying to send me to a gynecologist.  It's not a sex issue, it's a weight-loss issue. Five fractures were caused by sex, one from a fall and one from bending over. I am definitely seeking a second opinion!

Your blood calcium levels will be fine, until you're almost DEAD. What you need to be looking at is your Vitamin D and your PTH. I'm willing to bet your D is less than 30 and your PTH over 100. What you need is 50,000IU 'dry' D3 every day, not a tummy tuck.

If anything, there's LESS skin and tissue on your ribs now.

I know of a woman who had the same thing happen and her D levels were dangerously low causing low calcium = brittle bones.  Get some bloodwork done ASAP.

What actual number values were your Vitamin D and your PTH? Did you get an actual hard copy of your labs, or did your doctor just tell you "Everything's fine"?
