Hi all, newbie here and am trying to make final decision on having the sleeve only done or the sleeve with duodenal switch. It seems the risks and complications is higher with the ds than the sleeve, but the rate of keeping it off is higher with the sleeve than the ds. any thoughts or tips would be appreciated thanks

I'm 8 years out, and have maintained a huge weight loss for this entire time. I saw people talk about only getting the sleeve back .when i had my surgery. A few years later, many of those same people returned to get the ds because they either did not lose enough weight or were unable to keep it off.

It's up to you, but I'd strongly consider the DS.

Thank you so much for the info, I can do the supplements but my mind wanders to that scene in the movie sex and the city where Samantha is stopped at the airport where the security people take all her hormone replacement supplements cuz they think its illegal drugs, funny scene but it makes me wonder what I'd do if I couldn't get my hands on any supplements or at least the ones I'd need in a foreign country, will discuss more at the doctors tomorrow thanks.

I've travelled multiple times by planes..and no one has stopped me because of my vitamins. Trust me, they are a lot easier to get through security than a cpap machine (which i haven't used in about 8 years).

Ask a lot of questions..I've been around these boards long enough to see people come and go then come back for revisions because they got a surgery that doesn't work for them. The old saying is true...think twice ...cut once.

Hopefully this helps, 3 1/2 years out and this person regained 50 percent of their weight:

The worst part about this post is that the people posting (with the exceptions of the DSers) are blaming the person not the surgery. I had my surgery.....it works for me. I do eat some sweets, I do eat lots of carbs, and for the most part i've maintained most of my weight loss.

I'd say DS if you are a foodie. I am a foodie and I love eating..even after the surgery. If you will be able to have good self-control and exercise regularly, then sleeve may be enough. One thing to keep in mind, DS will give you stinky gas/stool, but it gets better overtime but will still be stronger than non-WLS patients.

I am a happy DS'r  I think with all the stress of life if I had not done the DS I would have gained everything back. I stay within 15 lbs of lowest weight at all times and if I get higher I just cut carbs for a couple of weeks.  My mom passed and I have had lots of stress and I am sure I have eaten more than dozens of donuts... So if you are a stress eater, DS doesnt let you get too far off track.. Thanks for listening.

I think you mis-spoke---it's the DS that has the greatest long-term, maintained weight-loss stats, NOT the Sleeve. This is because the DS causes dramatic, permanent changes in the way we metabolize food, and with the DS we'll always malabsorp a significant per centage of the calories we eat.

I know that with the Sleeve, I'd have regained everything I lost, plus some.
